What's better than a free screening of a great flick? We can't wait to see this Thursday night at Coligny Theatre for FREE! We sure hope you will join us, here are the details:
What: In partnership with the Hilton Head Island MLK Committee for Justice, Mitchelville is hosting a reception, movie screening, and discussion for "A Crime on the Bayou." The film tells the story of Gary Duncan, a Black teenager arrested and convicted for touching a white boy’s arm in Louisiana in 1968. A young Jewish attorney, Richard Sobol, leaves his prestigious D.C. firm to volunteer in New Orleans and challenge his unfair arrest. Their fight goes all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, and Duncan and Sobol’s lifelong friendship is forged. Of the film, producer John Legend says "This film speaks directly to the issues in front of us – White Supremacy, individual bravery, the rule of law, democracy. But its heartbeat is the profound alliance between a Black teen on trial and his young Jewish attorney. This allyship is what moved me the most.” Join us for conversation and learning while we watch this critically acclaimed film at Coligny Theater.
Who: The Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization whose mission is to replicate, preserve, and sustain an historically significant site and to educate the public about the sacrifice, resilience, and perseverance of the freedmen of Mitchelville and to share the story of how these brave men and women planted strong and enduring familial roots for generations of future African-Americans. Set against the natural backdrop of Hilton Head Island, The Mitchelville Preservation Project will become the Lowcountry's jewel Civil War attraction.
