📍 Lonesome Lake Hut, White Mountains NH 🏔️

To the lake and the sky ✨ If you’ve ever wanted to experience an off-grid mountain hut, this is a good place to start! The Appalachian Mountain Club’s Lonesome Lake Hut is too cute and only 1.2 miles to get to (though it’s steep).

👉 Follow Alaina Pinto | New England Travel & Beyond for more New England adventures (and beyond) and save this post for your future hut trip!
Here are some quick logistics:

🧭 Getting There: The hike up from the Lafayette Place Campground parking lot is short but a steady, rocky climb (1.2 miles, approx. 1,000 ft elevation gain).
🎒 What to pack: sleeping bag, camp pillow, snacks, clothing, headlamp, portable charger and your other necessities for an overnight
🛖 The Hut: It’s full-service in the summer/fall, meaning there’s dinner and breakfast (included in your stay). There’s bathrooms with composting toilets and running water and a place to fill your bottles/bladders.
🛌 The sleep situation: Co-ed bunkhouses! Bring earplugs.
🥾 Hike more: If you use the hut as a basecamp like we did, you can summit North and South Kinsman (both official NH 4,000 footers). It’s a rugged, challenging 7+ mile day-hike from the hut. There’s also Cannon nearby too.
🪰 The Bugs: It was BUGGY up there. Bring a head net!
🌟 The Hike Safe card: basically your wilderness insurance, if something goes wrong and you need rescued this exempts you form the cost.
🥞 The vibe: It’s like summer camp for adults (and kids) in the woods (complete with a legendary crew and fresh-baked goodies). So fun, family friendly, great sunsets (if the weather is good to you), fun conversation, books/games and more.

I bet you didn’t know there’s a mountain hut system in New Hampshire that serves you breakfast and dinner like this!

It’s one of our favorite things about staying at the ’s huts in the White Mountains.

NEW! Millborn Farm opens in Massachusetts as the 123rd Trustees reservation. This stunning 195 acre waterfront delight is right on the Sherborn and Millis line. It opens on June 20, 2026 at 1pm - but I got to go on a first-look nature walk with The Trustees president and CEO, Katie (and a couple members of the team).

I learned that it takes a lot of effort to acquire and make a climate friendly plan to open a new property!

Here’s what you can expect:
🌲 The Property: Mapped trails for passive recreation. Think hiking, dog walking (on leash!), trail running, and eventually winter snowshoeing or cross-country skiing (un-groomed). There’s an old barn on site which the great-great granddaughters of The Trustees’ founder Charles Eliot actually live in! There’s also another building site turned garden.

🛶 A Future “Charles River Valley Water Trail” Adventure?: This property features over a mile of frontage along the Charles River. The Trustees’ bigger vision? They are working to connect Millborn Farm with their other reservations along the river (like Rocky Narrows, Cedariver and others) to create a regional water trail concept for a multi-site kayaking and canoeing adventure!

🦅 A Wildlife Sanctuary: If you love bird-watching, bring your binoculars. Over 130 distinct species of birds have already been documented on this property alone.

🧽 Climate Heroes: The kind of plant life you’ll see here protects the Charles River and will help with natural flooding. It also acts like a giant sponge to protect the river from yucky runoff from big rains.

📍 Find Millborn Farm on the Sherborn/Millis line), it’s completely FREE and open to the public, like almost all of the Trustees locations (and if you become a Member, your membership helps support this!)

I just can’t stop thinking about West Chester and Kennett Square (both in Pennsylvania). This Brandywine Valley is absolutely charming. If you’re interested in a visit I’ve created a reel with much more in the caption. 🤗

I can’t say enough good things about Montréal and The Eastern Townships region in Québec. I truly believe both areas must be experienced and are ideal for road tripping from anywhere in New England.

🎷 The Festival: June 25 - July 4 with 350+ FREE, open-air concerts right in the heart of downtown (which closes to traffic). Music is all day until midnight! Festival International de Jazz de Montréal

🥯 Eat here: Grab iconic Montreal-style bagels (We went to Fairmont Bagel), poutine (try it anywhere), and definitely make a dinner reservation at Cadet (Michelin Bib Gourmand winner). Restaurant Cadet & Fairmount Bagel

🛍️ Shop here: Stroll through the “Mile End” neighborhood for incredible boutique shopping! You’ll find the bagels and gnocchi here too.

🎆 Views: Go to the Kondiaronk lookout in Mount Royal Park to see the city from a Birds Eye view and catch a Fireworks Competition over the Saint Lawrence River (this is actually amazing don’t miss it).

🌲 Nature Stop (on the way home): Go to Sutton, Magog or Bromont!
🧖‍♀️ Spa recs: Balnea Spa, Spa Bolton, Spa Nordic Station (Spa Bolton is featured)
🍦 Ice cream rec: Snöbol Bar à glaces (get it dipped) Snöbol Bar à glaces
🍷 Vineyard rec: Château Ste-Agnès winery Château Ste.Agnès

It took us about 5 hours to get to Montréal from Boston but we left at a good time to avoid traffic! 🚗💨
