2 Knott Countians Arrested in Hostage Standoff

According to Kentucky State Police, one man is in custody following a lengthy standoff with Kentucky State Police (KSP) troopers. KSP received the call at 4:12 a.m. EST on Friday, May 15, 2026, regarding a domestic violence assault on Buck Road in the Whitesburg community of Letcher County.

Upon arriving at the scene, troopers determined that the individuals involved in the domestic dispute had fled to a neighboring residence. When troopers attempted to make contact at the residence, a male subject barricaded himself inside with several other individuals and refused to exit the home.

Following a brief standoff, one male and two female subjects exited the residence and informed troopers that Dusty Shell, 36, of Emmalena, remained inside the home armed with a firearm along with another male subject.

Troopers secured the perimeter and requested assistance from the KSP Special Response Team (SRT). Upon arrival of SRT on scene, negotiations were conducted successfully, and Shell surrendered without incident.

Shell was transported and lodged into the Letcher County Jail where he was charged with Assault 2nd Degree (Domestic Violence), Terroristic threatening 2nd Degree and Parole Violation charges.

Additionally, Amy Griffith, 45, of Hindman, was arrested and lodged in the Letcher County Jail on an unrelated out-of-state warrant.

This incident remains under investigation by Trooper Marcus Prater.

We join Knott County Schools and the community in mourning the passing of longtime educator Dwight Creech this morning.

A statement from Knott County Schools: Parents and members of the Knott County Schools community, we are deeply saddened to share that Dwight Creech, the beloved principal of Carr Creek Elementary School, passed away early this morning after battling ongoing health concerns.

During his nearly 25 years of service to the students of Knott County, Mr. Creech served as principal at Beckham Combs Elementary School and the Cordia School prior to his time at Carr Creek. He was a devoted father, husband, friend, and educator who cherished his students and treated them as his own. His dedication and passion for education and the Knott County community earned him the respect of both colleagues and families alike.

Throughout his career, Mr. Creech devoted himself to serving children and has made a lasting impact on the lives of many. His presence as the leader of the Carr Creek “tribe” will be profoundly missed.

Administration has spoken with faculty, staff, and students this morning and are notifying the community so that families can be prepared to discuss this news together. We understand this may be difficult for many, and we have grief counseling support available at the school for students who may need someone to talk to in the coming days.

As you might understand, this news is both shocking and heartbreaking. We appreciate your understanding, patience, and sympathy during this difficult time, and we ask that you keep Mr. Creech’s family and the Carr Creek community in your thoughts and prayers.
Funeral arrangements will be shared once these have been made by his family.

HWY 160 N IN HINDMAN TO CLOSE TEMPORARILY

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet
(KYTC) District 12 advises motorists of upcoming traffic pattern changes
at the intersection of KY 80 (Hal Rogers Parkway) and KY 160 in Knott
County as part of an ongoing pavement improvement project.

Beginning Monday, April 20, KY 160 North (near Double Kwik) will be
closed to all traffic at the intersection with KY 80 to allow crews to
continue concrete pavement replacement. During this time, motorists will
not be able to access KY 160 North from KY 160 South or from KY 80 in
either direction.
(KYTC has provided an updated clarification):
🚧 • The connector to Hindman WILL remain open
• KY 80 westbound slow lane and shoulder remain closed
• Local traffic can use KY 1087 to reach KY 160 North
• Tractor-trailers should NOT use KY 1087 due to narrow roads 🚧

The closure is expected to last approximately 7 to 10 days, with work
scheduled through April 29, weather permitting.

Current traffic control measures will remain in place along KY 80,
including the closure of the westbound slow lane and shoulder to
maintain a safe work zone.

Crews will be working Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., with
Saturday hours from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Some overnight work may occur to
help expedite the project timeline.

Motorists should expect to see barricades, barrels, signage, and
occasional flagging operations throughout the work zone.

While an official detour will not be posted, local traffic may access KY
160 North via KY 1087 off KY 80. However, tractor-trailer traffic is
_strongly discouraged_ from using this route due to narrow roadways and
sharp curves.

This work is part of a larger project to replace asphalt with
longer-lasting concrete pavement at the intersection, which will help
reduce rutting and improve long-term durability in this high-traffic
area.

KYTC has coordinated with local agencies, including the school bus
garage and Mountain Comprehensive Care, to minimize disruptions.

Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and use
caution in the work zone.
