There is a stray calf on the Alvin Funkhouser place 2 miles west and 5 miles south of Hobart. It is a black whiteface weighing about 500 pounds and with a red ear tag. It has been on the place for 2 to 3 weeks. For information phone Alvin 580 481 9867.

The Hobart Board of Education will meet tonight at 7pm at the superintendent’s office.

Agenda items include:
Public Hearing for Parents Living on Indian Land and Tribal Officials, discussion and vote on the 2025-2026 Estimate of Needs, consideration of new and revised school policies, roofing projects, student transfer capacities, after school tutoring programs, booster club sanctioning, and contracts with Western Technology Center.

The board will also discuss acceptance of funds from the Hobart Educational Enrichment Foundation, advisory committee appointments, and selection of representatives for the Educator Hall of Fame Committee.

Personnel matters include resignations, employment of teachers, tutors, assistants, a wrestling coach, and substitute employees.

📌 Hobart city administration meetings will be held Tuesday, September 9th at City Hall beginning with city council at 5pm, followed by public works authority and Hobart recreation authority.

🚨 A Mountain View man, Terry L. Sperle, 54, was seriously injured in a vehicle crash Thursday night on Highway 152 east of Cordell. He was flown to OU Medical Center. OHP reports his vehicle lost control while pulling a trailer. Sperle was not wearing a seat belt and alcohol was suspected.

🚨 A Greer County man, Chaz Anthony Crain, has been arrested and charged with be******ty and animal cruelty after investigators recovered disturbing videos from his cell phone. He remains jailed on $100,000 bond.

🎂 Happy Birthday Saturday to LeRoy Jones of Mountain View. He will be 93.

💧 Altus Air Force Base has announced it received a Notice of Violation from the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality following recent water testing results. The quarterly test for total trihalom**hanes (TTHMs) exceeded the maximum level allowed by the EPA. Officials say this notice is primarily regulatory and does not indicate an immediate health risk. All water is supplied by the City of Altus, and both city and base officials are working to ensure compliance with EPA standards and provide safe water supplies. This is the second notice in under a year for the same issue.

🚓 Four people have been arrested in Grady County on a series of drug charges. A traffic stop on August 30 led to the discovery of m**hamphetamine, he**in, and other substances. A search warrant the following day uncovered fi****ms, ma*****na, m**h, and mushrooms at a residence. Those arrested face multiple charges, including possession with intent to distribute and trafficking. They are being held in the Grady County Jail awaiting court appearances later this month.

🏍 A motorcycle crash east of Binger injured a Minco man Wednesday night. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reports 34-year-old Travis S. Davis was traveling westbound on Highway 152 when his motorcycle failed to negotiate a curve, struck a ditch, and crashed. He was transported for treatment of injuries.

🚗 The Altus Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #120 will host its 4th Annual “COPS & CARS” Indoor Car and Bike Show on Saturday, September 27 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. inside Hangar 36 at the Altus Municipal Airport. The event will include food trucks, vendors, a K9 demonstration, kids’ activities, a live DJ, raffle prizes, and vehicle competitions with cash payouts. All proceeds benefit local FOP community programs.

🎣 A fishing event for children with special needs will be held Saturday, October 4 at Great Plains State Park. Participants will receive a rod and reel, tackle box, T-shirt, hat, and a photo plaque. ⚖️ As part of Attorney General Gentner Drummond’s ongoing fight against the fentanyl crisis, 38-year-old Charles Everett Sewell has been sentenced to 20 years for his role in the 2021 overdose death of Jack Thach of Oklahoma City.

Prosecutors said Sewell acted as a sophisticated drug dealer who knowingly sold fentanyl pills to Thach despite his history of addiction. Oklahoma continues to see devastating increases in fentanyl overdoses, rising from 50 deaths in 2019 to 730 in 2023. The Attorney General’s Office is pushing federal authorities to close trafficking loopholes while distributing opioid settlement funds to communities for treatment and prevention programs.

🚨 The Oklahoma Highway Patrol has issued a Kasey Alert for 17-year-old Daxton Walsh. Walsh is 6 feet tall, 200 pounds, last seen in Weatherford wearing a white T-shirt and black shorts with flowers. He may be driving a white 2012 Ford F-150 with Oklahoma tag NTB-043. Authorities say Walsh is believed to be suicidal. Anyone with information should call 911 immediately.

🏫 Lone Wolf Schools have upgraded security with new outside doors using state Security Program Funds. A Mangum contractor was hired for installation to help ensure the safety of students and staff.

🌳 Altus voters will soon decide on a proposed 4% tax on short-term stay facilities, including hotels and motels. If passed, funds will go toward building new parks and improving existing ones.

Kiowa County Commissioners met Tuesday morning in Hobart.

Commissioners approved the sale of county property at 521 South Lowe (Thayers Addition Block 4, Lots 10 & 11) to Weatherly Ventures, LLC for $500. They also approved Resolution #2025-32 for the Sheriff’s Office Funding Grant Program application in the amount of $150,000, the same as last year.

Representatives from Joe D. Hall Construction provided updates on the new Kiowa County Detention Facility. They discussed recent change orders involving water and sewer lines, roof and restroom modifications, and other adjustments that will raise costs. Commissioners plan to use overrun funds from the budget to cover the changes.

🌆 The City of Altus is asking residents to vote on an ordinance that would place a 4% tax on short-term stay facilities such as hotels and motels. If approved, the funds would go toward new parks and renovations of existing ones.

🐄 The screwworm, a parasitic fly once eradicated in Texas in 1966, has been spotted moving northward from South America, raising concerns among area farmers. Unlike maggots, screwworms burrow into live tissue, affecting livestock, pets, and even humans. Experts say sterile fly releases, along with livestock management practices, remain the best defense against outbreaks.

Kiowa County Commissioners meet this morning at 10 a.m. at the courthouse in Hobart. Along with routine business, commissioners will consider the sale of county property to Weatherly Ventures, LLC for $500, approval of Resolution #2025-32 regarding a Sheriff’s Office funding grant, and discussion of a new Kiowa County Detention Facility project.

🚨 A Chickasha man was seriously injured in a boating accident Sunday afternoon at Sunset Cove Marina on Fort Cobb Lake. Larrel L. Keel, 70, was airlifted to OU Trauma Center after being pinned in his boat. He remains in stable condition.

🚔 In Beckham County, a felony warrant has been issued for Jeffrey Paul Walker, wanted for identity theft and related charges. Bond is set at $100,000. Authorities report Walker may have fled the area. If seen, do not approach—call law enforcement or the Elk City Police Department at 580-225-1212.

🍂 Friends of the Wichitas will host Bugling Elk Tours at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge beginning September 13, with additional dates through October 25. Fall Foliage Hikes are scheduled for November 15 and 22. Registration opens September 8 at friendsofthewichitas.org/tours.
