LOCAL NEWS
District Attorney Dan Jacobsma of Altus has announced his candidacy for election to continue serving Oklahoma’s 3rd District. The district includes Jackson, Greer, Harmon, Kiowa, and Tillman Counties. Jacobsma was appointed in 2024 by Governor Kevin Stitt and says his mission is to protect communities, uphold justice, and ensure every citizen’s voice is heard.
The National Transportation Safety Board has released a preliminary report on the Nov. 12 Weatherford gas leak at the Holiday Inn Express and Suites. The anhydrous ammonia leak injured 74 people, including four critically. According to the report, the AirGas cargo truck had recently completed routine maintenance and was 58% full at the time of the leak. The driver attempted to stop the leak from the manway cover but was unsuccessful. The tank emptied into the area before crews cleared the scene. Investigators reviewed the cargo tank, surrounding area, training records, company procedures, and surveillance footage. The investigation remains ongoing.

Two individuals, Haley Dawn Dye and Slayton Lee McKinnon, were arrested in Custer County following an investigation into copper wire and equipment theft from a wind turbine near Thomas. A trail camera was placed after the first reported theft, and a second theft occurred on December 2. Later that day, a deputy stopped a vehicle occupied by the pair and recovered burnt copper wire and a 50-foot garden hose matching items stolen from the site.
The Friends of the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum in Clinton have received a $71,505 Route 66 Revitalization Grant to restore and display the historic Glancy Motor Hotel neon sign. The sign is the only remaining piece of the former hotel, which opened in 1950 and closed in the 1970s. Plans call for the restored sign to be installed at the museum in spring 2026, just ahead of the Route 66 centennial. The City of Clinton, the museum, and the Oklahoma Historical Society partnered to save and relight the sign.

Southwestern Oklahoma State University will hold its 2025 Fall Commencement Ceremony Friday, Dec. 12, at 6 p.m. in the Pioneer Event Center. The event honors students completing associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees following the summer and fall semesters. A livestream will be available on the SWOSU website.
The City of Hobart Parks and Recreation Board will host Christmas in the Park this Saturday, December 13, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Hunter Park. Activities include light displays, bounce houses, food vendors, face painting, Christmas carols, raffle drawings, a painted rock hunt, pictures with Santa, and the Light Up Your Ride Parade at 7 p.m. The event is cash-only and donation-based, except food trucks.

The Hobart Chamber of Commerce invites everyone to “Breakfast with the Clauses” on Saturday, Dec. 13 at 10 a.m. at the Event Room at the Hobart Municipal Golf Course. Breakfast will be served, Mrs. Claus will read stories, and children may visit with Santa. Children 3 and under are free; ages 4 and up are $5; families of four or more children are $20.

Lone Wolf will host its “Country Christmas” and Parade of Lights on Saturday, Dec. 13. The parade begins at dark. Activities include a soup dinner, cookies, cocoa, spiced tea, Santa’s Workshop, and the Nativity Story.

Altus will hold its Christmas parade Saturday, Dec. 13 at 6 p.m., themed “Christmas at the Movies.” The parade begins at the Western Oklahoma State College parking lot and proceeds down Main Street to Commerce Street.

The Kiowa County Retired Educators’ Association will meet Tuesday, Dec. 16 at 11:30 a.m. at Hobart Elementary School. A $10 donation includes lunch and entertainment by elementary students.

🌸 Craig Flynn Pruitt, 57, originally from Hobart, died December 7 in an auto accident south of Hinton. He was born in Hobart and graduated from Hobart High School in 1986, where he excelled in athletics and was honored as senior athlete of the year. He earned a degree from SWOSU and began his teaching and coaching career in Lone Wolf, later coaching in Hinton, Anadarko for ten years, and returning to Hinton. He was preceded in death by his father Harold Pruitt and brother Harold “Wendell” Pruitt.
He is survived by his mother, Elva Pruitt of Hobart; his girlfriend, Stacey Gray of Norman; children Chelsea Ragap and Bryce Pruitt; Cameryn Pruitt of Weatherford; and grandchildren.
Services will be Friday, December 12 at 10 a.m. in the Hinton Coliseum with burial at 3 p.m. at the Lone Wolf Cemetery under the direction of Turner Funeral Home of Hinton.

🌸 Gary Bullen, 77, of Mountain View, died November 23 in Carnegie. He grew up and attended school in Mountain View and Carnegie. He was owner and operator of All-Star Transportation and also worked in farming and ranching. He married Cynthia Bless in 1995.
He is survived by his wife and children: Rick of Florida; Lori Smith of Texas; Ryan Herttenberger of Mountain View; Jarrod Herttenberger of Shawnee; Karin Rodriguez of Texas; and several grandchildren.
Memorial services will be Saturday, December 13 at 2 p.m. at Cowboy Church Elgin-Apache in Apache.

🌆 Hobart City Administration Meetings
Hobart city administration meetings were held Tuesday evening. A public comment period opened the meeting, with speakers given three minutes each.
Chris Fleming of the Parks and Recreation Board discussed code of conduct concerns, and Keith Theesen suggested honoring the late A.C. Aker with a statue for his work securing water rights at Foss Reservoir. Theesen also stated he has evidence of possible jet fuel contamination entering Rocky Lake and Hunter Park Lake.
🏛️ Hobart City Council
The council handled routine business and several key actions:
Approved removing former council member Rick Hopson as an authorized signatory for city financial documents.
Discussed recommendations for condemnation of three properties:
801 S Washington, condemnation approved.
513 N Jefferson, tabled 30 days.
415 S Randlett, tabled 30 days.
Tabled action on amending the Hunter Lake ordinance, the annual strategic planning session, and the proposed Parks & Recreation Accountability and Ethics Policy. Board members Jessi Shriver and Brinna Hollister reviewed their recommendations and took council suggestions for revisions.
Approved appointments to the Hobart Beautification Commission: Amy Rudkins, Leigh Standerfer, Allison Sherle, Vanessa Wald, Bobby Herbst, and Debbie Norman.
Took no action on appointing a representative to the Lone Wolf–Hobart 522 Ambulance Board pending clarification from the county.
The Parks and Recreation Board reviewed progress on code of conduct updates, trash cans, picnic tables, benches, and possible storage for Hunter Park Christmas decorations. No action was taken.
Acting City Manager Charlotte Giddens reported on the completion of the Hunter Park walking track, use of salt water during the recent snow, and progress on new water meters.
💧 Hobart Public Works Authority
Approved acceptance of an $85,000 REAP grant for the purchase of a new utility truck.
A 30-minute executive session was held on personnel matters. Five applicants for city manager were interviewed Monday, and no action was taken either then or following Tuesday night's session.
Giddens reported no update from Sullivan Engineering on the Hobart Water Improvement Project. She noted the new billing system conversion is complete but still being refined. Water meter replacement is ongoing and expected to finish in February.
⛳ Hobart Recreation Authority
Giddens reported 93 paid members at Hobart Municipal Golf Course and 514 rounds of golf played in November.
🏫 Hobart Board of Education
A brief special meeting will be held Friday, December 12 at noon at the superintendent's office. The sole agenda item is possible action on a one-time stipend for professional development.
🚨 Law Enforcement Update
The Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office assisted Kiowa County with a search warrant east of Lake Thunderbird. A stolen item equipped with a GPS tracker was successfully recovered. The investigation continues under Kiowa County authorities.
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is investigating a homicide discovered December 7 at Frederick Lake involving a 16-year-old male. Two suspects—18-year-old Ana Mejia and a 15-year-old male—were located and arrested on First-Degree Murder complaints December 8. Multiple agencies assisted with the investigation.
🌾 Agriculture News
Congressman Frank Lucas announced a $12 billion economic assistance package for American farmers. Up to $11 billion will support the USDA’s Farmer Bridge Assistance Program, with funds expected by February 28th, 2026. Lucas stated the relief will significantly help producers across Oklahoma.

🌆 Hobart Public Works Authority
The Hobart Public Works Authority met Monday evening in a special meeting, spending most of the session in executive discussion. Members interviewed five applicants for the position of Hobart City Manager. No decisions were made upon returning to open session.
🏫 Hobart Board of Education
The Hobart Board of Education also met Monday evening.
Superintendent Natika Peterson reported on routine business and financial matters, noting recent revenue collections totaling more than $672,000. Collections for the year have exceeded $10.9 million from federal, state, and county sources.
The board approved renewal of the contract with Walsworth Publishing Company for both high school and K–8 yearbooks. This marks the seventh year the company has produced Hobart’s yearbooks.
The board acknowledged Third Quarter Student Transfer Capacities for the 2024–2025 school year.
Principals reported on enrollment and activities:
Elementary has 309 students, Middle School 153, and High School 174, for a district total of 636 students.
Superintendent Peterson also reported:
Hobart Public Schools have saved significant funds by converting buses to compressed fuel.
Farm Bureau has collected coats statewide for students in need.
An incorrect AI-generated social media post falsely reporting a snow delay recently caused confusion.
State Board of Education school grades were released: Elementary D, Middle School D, and High School C. She emphasized that the grading metrics can be misleading and praised Hobart teachers for their strong work and student progress.
New tables and chairs or attached stools have been installed in the high school/middle school cafeteria and the Hancock Event Center.
State Question 841—which proposes eliminating property taxes—could remove $870 million from Oklahoma school funding unless replaced by another source.
She also commented on concerns about race-related tensions reported in some schools.
An executive session was held on personnel matters.
Returning to open session, the board:
Approved employment of Natika Peterson as Superintendent for fiscal years 26–27 and 27–28, with a 3% wage increase beginning July 1, 2026.
Tabled the hiring of a special education teacher assistant.
Approved the employment of Ashley Herbst and Nicole Eardman as non-certified substitute teachers for the 2025–2026 school year.

🚓 Lake Frederick Shooting
A teenager was killed in a shooting Sunday night at Lake Frederick. Frederick Police responded to the scene, and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation was called in around midnight. The victim’s name has not been released. Authorities completed processing the scene Monday morning.
🚘 Fatal Crash North of Anadarko
A two-vehicle collision Sunday, December 7, at 2:09 p.m. on Highway 281 north of Anadarko claimed the life of Craig F. Pruitt, 57, of Anadarko, formerly of Hobart and a graduate of Hobart High School.
Pruitt, a Hinton Elementary School physical education and athletic coach, died after his vehicle collided head-on with another driven by Angel G. Carrillo-De La Cruz, 21, of Lookeba, who was injured. Hinton police reported Pruitt’s vehicle was engulfed in flames. The crash remains under investigation.
🗳️ Absentee Voting for 2026 Elections
Kiowa County voters may now request absentee ballots for the 2026 election year through the State Election Board’s OK Voter Portal or by application from the Election Board office. Requests must be renewed annually.
The Kiowa County Election Board is located at 201 N. Lincoln in Hobart and can be reached at 580-726-2509. Office hours are 9 a.m.–3 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Joan Stone, 90, of Mangum, died December 4. She was a longtime substitute teacher and the wife of the late James Stone, a Mangum veterinarian. She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Ritter of Indiahoma, and grandchildren.
Graveside services will be Tuesday, December 9 at 2 p.m. at Roselawn Cemetery in Mangum.

Gary Bullen, 77, of Mountain View, died November 23 in Carnegie. He grew up and attended school in Mountain View and Carnegie and operated All-Star Transportation along with several other business ventures, including farming and ranching. He married Cynthia Bless in 1995 and is survived by his wife and children Rick of Florida, Lori Smith of Texas, Ryan Herttenberger of Mountain View, Jarrod Herttenberger of Shawnee, and Karin Rodriguez of Texas, along with grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 13 at Cowboy Church Elgin-Apache in Apache.

Carl Franklin Groseclose, 86, of Carnegie, died December 6.
Memorial services will be Saturday, December 13 at 1 p.m. at the Church of the Nazarene in Carnegie, directed by Ray and Martha’s Funeral Home of Carnegie.

📌 Hobart Public Works Authority
The Hobart Public Works Authority will hold a special meeting today at 5 p.m. at City Hall. The agenda includes an executive session on personnel matters, including employment or hiring of any salaried public officer or a city manager. The city had been accepting applications for the City Manager position through Friday.
📘 Hobart Board of Education
The Hobart Board of Education meets tonight at 7 p.m. at the school administration office. In addition to routine business and reports, items for consideration include contracts for the 2025–2026 school year with Walsworth Publishing Company for the High School and K–8 yearbooks, third quarter student transfer capacities for the 2024–2025 year, principals’ reports, the superintendent’s report, and an executive session on personnel.
Upon returning to open session, the board will consider the employment of Natika Peterson as Superintendent of Hobart Public Schools for future fiscal years, possible action on hiring a Special Education Teacher Assistant for 2025–2026, and possible action on hiring substitute employees for the 2025–2026 school year.
🎖️ Oklahoma National Guard
A ribbon cutting was recently held for the new Weatherford Regional Training Facility. The co-use facility supports expanding Oklahoma Guard presence in rural communities and will serve as an emergency management hub for western Oklahoma. Weatherford emergency officials and Alpha Battery, 158th Field Artillery Regiment, 45th Field Artillery Brigade, will utilize the location.
🚓 Law Enforcement Training
The Kiowa County Sheriff’s Office partnered with CLEET to host training on Friday, December 5, at Western Technology Center in Hobart. Deputies and officers from multiple counties and departments attended. Special thanks were given to CLEET Field Representative Vonnie Houser, CLEET Legal Counsel Preston Draper, and Benchmark Government Solutions for sponsoring lunch.

🎅 Christmas in the Park – Hobart
The Hobart Parks and Recreation Board will host “Christmas In The Park” Saturday, December 13, at the newly renovated Hunter Park. Donations of lights and outdoor décor are being accepted at Searchlight Thrift Store from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Park closures for preparations will be Wednesday through Saturday, reopening at 4 p.m. Saturday. A Light Up Your Ride parade through the park invites all vehicle types to participate.

Joan Stone, 90, of Mangum, passed away December 4. She was a substitute teacher for Mangum Schools and the wife of the late James Stone, a Mangum veterinarian. She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Ritter of Indiahoma, and grandchildren.
Visitation will be Monday, December 8 from 5–7 p.m. at Greer Funeral Home in Mangum. Graveside services will be Tuesday, December 9 at Roselawn Cemetery in Mangum.
