Our renovation and expansion of the American International School of Guangzhou honors the past while bringing new life to the 42-year-old campus.

Established in 1981 for the children of American diplomats, AISG is the first school of its kind in southern China and the oldest not-for-profit international school in Guangzhou. Our Shanghai studio built upon this legacy with a redesign that looks to the future of learning environments, offering the choice of a variety of spaces, each tuned for different learning styles. Providing access to the outdoors and views to nature, this forward-thinking interdisciplinary campus gives students support and inspiration throughout their educational journey.

Reintroducing an icon: view_boston is the ultimate observatory experience, offering unrivaled 360-degree views of the city skyline. Occupying the top three floors of the historic Prudential Tower, the recent renovation celebrates the tower’s architectural significance, reimagining “The Pru” as an essential first stop for visitors and a place residents will return to again and again. With indoor and outdoor panoramic views, an open-air roof deck, two dining spots, immersive exhibits, and more, it’s a place designed for everyone to enjoy.

mpierce_arch, design principal in our perkinswill_bos studio, describes it as a place where guests feel like they’re floating in the sky, surrounded by clouds. “Our focus was always on creating an exceptional experience that you can’t have anywhere else: to view the city through the iconic Prudential sign; to step to the edge of the deck and feel the breeze and hear the sounds of the streets below; to see Boston differently,” he says.

Robert Goodwin, design principal in our perkinswill_ny studio, envisions the future workplace in mixed-use communities like the West Village to be something like this: “Even though people think of the Village as this small-scale, informal, brownstone neighborhood, the next generation of office workers and tenants are looking for a much more loft-like, fluid, and flexible environment.”

Unlike the sky-high developments proliferating across New York City today, 799 Broadway—at 12 stories high—offers a more intimate and social environment. It brings the workplace outdoors, catering to the needs of a new generation of creatives through sustainable, healthy, and human-centered design.

A leading global tech brand’s first home in Ireland repurposes Dublin’s former postal sorting office into a modern workplace.

Drawing on the creative culture that fuels Dublin today, The Sorting Office brings the city’s colour and energy inside. Ribbons of lighting echo the urban skyline, murals by local artists line the atrium, and vibrant monochromatic fit-outs flood each floor with a different colour palette.

The journey through the space is inspired by walks through Dublin itself. Layouts mimic the variety of nearby blocks and parks, and workspaces are located between breakout, sensory, and wellness spaces on every floor. The entire roof level is dedicated to a peaceful sensory space and garden terrace to nurture the five senses.

Throughout The Sorting Office, nods to the building’s postal past blend with digital screens celebrating the brand’s identity. It’s a space where history meets innovation, designed to inspire creativity and foster community.

Building bridges: The U.S. could learn a lot from Canada’s approach to transit-oriented development.

The U.S. Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act marks a significant step forward, allocating funds toward enhancing public transit, rail systems, clean energy, and electric vehicle infrastructure. These investments are vital to the future prosperity of the nation, and if deployed in the right way, they could also help build healthier communities. Explore several examples in Canada that illustrate how transportation projects can be developed with urban design tactics and a mix of uses to improve connectivity, social equity, sustainability, and resilience. Everyday architecture shouldn’t be banal. It should elevate and enrich the human experience.

Preserving the essence of our cities goes beyond their iconic skyscrapers. We must consider the humble, everyday spaces that define a great urban experience. Because urban fabric is more than just buildings; it’s the spaces in between—streets, sidewalks, and parks—through which people move and connect. Our Chief Sustainability Officer, Jason McLennan, believes there’s no better time than now to reinvest in our urban fabric—to design consistently beautiful, thoughtful, functional buildings at every scale and in full support of healthy, sustainable communities.

Urban fabric buildings featured:

1. Peterborough Arena and Aquatic Complex in Ontario, Canada
2. Sugar House Island Primary School in London, England
3. ASHRAE Headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia
4. 1222 22nd Street in Washington, D.C.
5. Family Tree Clinic in Minneapolis, Minnesota
6. Innolabs in Long Island City, New York

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (ebrd_official)’s new Canary Wharf Headquarters is a paragon of green design.

Founded in 1991 to aid nations making the transition to market economies, the EBRD spent nearly 30 years in the same building. Today, its new London workplace reflects its vision of sustainability, well-being, and social responsibility while supporting a culture of choice, collaboration, and innovation. With a focus on sourcing environmentally friendly materials, the design team aimed for a net-zero carbon fit-out, using items designed for disassembly and reuse. The result is an exemplar of sustainability that is simultaneously a warm, inviting space where everyone feels welcome and inspired. Link in bio.

Converting old buildings into new uses, a practice known as adaptive reuse or repurposing, is one of the most sustainable ways to build.

Communities are recognizing the value of preserving the historical character of their neighborhoods, while the evolving market is compelling owners and developers to rethink their existing real estate. In this article, explore how the practice of repurposing is changing and how high-tech programs like life sciences laboratories are being integrated into old building stock.
