AKWESASNE BURN BAN IN EFFECT

For Immediate Release:
Seskéha/August 11, 2025

AKWESASNE – (Seskéha/August 11, 2025) Due to the extremely dry weather conditions and low humidity levels there is an elevated risk of uncontrolled wildfires in Akwesasne and surrounding areas. As a result, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe, and the Hogansburg Akwesasne Vol Fire Department (HAVFD) are notifying the community that a burn ban is active effective immediately for all of Akwesasne, the North and South portions, respectively.

During this time, please refrain from starting brush fires; fires in a burning barrel; or bonfires that contain leaves, grass, other items that can cause a large, open fire. An open fire could potentially start an uncontrolled wildfire, which can destroy personal property, place an individual’s safety at risk, and require an emergency response from the HAVFD, limiting their capacity to respond to other emergency calls.

It is acceptable for individuals to make small campfires in contained fire pits, such as a metal or stone fire pit you can purchase at a store, which often includes a cover to help contain or extinguish the fire. We ask that you please be cautious handling these devices and potential ignition sources, including the proper disposal of ci******es.

Please be respectful of this burn ban and recognize that it is intended to keep our community safe. The burn ban will be enforced and violators may be subject to fines.

Good Morning! We're sad to report that we have to cancel this year's tournament; however we will plan earlier notice for next year and looking at other community events around the same time. We appreciate your show of support throughout the year. The Mohawk Auction will be placed on a new date and items donated transferred to then. Thank you for everyone's efforts to get us there.

***GRASS/BRUSH FIRE**
The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police are assisting the Hogansburg Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department and asking the public to refrain from unnecessary travel on Cook Rd. near McDonald Rd. and Drum St. for the time being. HAVFD is dealing with a brush fire that has spread due to very dry conditions. We ask the public to stay out of the area so they can conduct their work without added traffic. There are no immediate concerns for public safety or property at this time. We will advise upon any changes or updates. Nia;wen.
