Mike plays the Mike Mangini Wicked Piston Player's Design model. The unique American Hickory design starts out at .580” (1.47cm) in the grip and increases slightly towards the middle of the stick until it reaches .620” (1.57cm) and then tapers back down to an acorn tip. Mike’s reason for this design is so that the stick has a slightly added front weight for a solid, consistent “throw” and transient sound. With the extra length, you can adjust how much front weight you’re implementing by slightly moving your fulcrum point up or down on the stick. You’ll also get a fat-sounding rimshot crack from the added front-weighted taper.

Nikki plays the Vater Phat Ride. Quick taper to a medium-sized round tip produces a clean sound on ride cymbals. Very versatile and playable stick with great balance. Also available in Sugar Maple.

Vintage inspired! A throwback to old-school brushes from decades ago. Going through Jack Adams’ [Alan Vater’s Grandfather] cases, we came across some vintage brushes made specifically for Jack when he owned and operated Jack’s Drum Shop in Boston, along with playing jazz and big band himself.

The Beantown Brush grip measures .530” for a lighter and quicker feel combined with a thinner gauge wire for more flex and a soft sound with plenty of classic swish tonality. The rubber grip’s reddish-brown color is a nod to both the vintage brush era, and Boston’s nickname of “Beantown”, where Vater’s drumstick making history began in the basement of Jack’s Drum Shop.

Nylon or Wood tips for you?

Neither is better or worse, just a matter of preference. If you want a bright, clean sound that will cut through guitars and bass then you want to go with a nylon tip. If you want a warmer, natural tone that will blend in with the surrounding sounds, then you want to go with a wood tip.

For session work, especially in the studio, it won't hurt to have some options in your stick bag to cover any eventuality.
