Students are invited to visit the building August 7, 8, 11, or 12 between 8:00 am – 2:00 pm to take care of important back-to-school items before the year begins.
✔ Move into your locker
✔ Buy parking tags or your lock
✔ Meet the office staff
✔ Drop off medications
✔ Pay school fees and take a tour

A sweet start to the school year 🍯

Holloway Elementary is kicking off the school year with a unique hands-on learning opportunity — a live bee observatory right on campus. Thanks to a $2,000 donation from the Springfield Schools Foundation and support from the Board of Education, students can now safely observe thousands of honeybees as they pollinate nearby prairie flowers and return to the hive.

Led by Principal Nelle Ratliff, a beekeeper herself, the project is designed to spark curiosity in science, nature, and environmental care. “There’s so much to learn from bees — teamwork, systems, and the power of working together,” she said.

The hive currently holds over 35,000 bees, with a clear tube connecting it to Holloway’s blooming prairie. As Ratliff reminds students: “If a bee comes near you, don’t swat — just walk away calmly. They’re not aggressive, they’re just doing their job.”

With lessons in pollination, life cycles, and community, Holloway’s hive is more than just a science project — it’s a sweet start to the school year.

Summer is almost over, and we can't wait to meet our new 4th grade and welcome back our 5th grade students! The Jumpstart emails will go to families on Monday. Jumpstart is on Aug 15, 18, 19 and 20th. With the two late nights being Monday and Tuesday. School will start on the 21st! Class lists will be posted on the front doors by mid-day on the 12th. If you know of any new families to the building, please share this page, along with our Parent Council page, to help keep everyone informed. See you soon!
