On this week’s episode of the Gulf States Gumbo, we teamed up with ’s to take a look at how Jefferson Parish — the parish with the most opioid overdoses in Louisiana — is spending its opioid settlement money.

Jefferson Parish is receiving the largest share of money from legal settlements with opioid manufacturers, marketers and distributors. But their investigation found that, so far, the parish has spent little of the money. And some believe what it has been spent on may not be the best investment.

Americans love shrimp, eating more than 5 pounds per person every single year. Most domestic shrimp comes from the Gulf of Mexico, caught by family fishing operations that have worked those waters for generations.

But Southern shrimpers are now facing a perfect storm: record fuel prices and a flood of cheap imported shrimp they can’t compete against.

The Gulf States Newsroom’s went down to Port Sulphur in Louisiana to talk with shrimpers and find out more about the issues plaguing them.

In response, groups across the region are organizing, holding rallies, and pushing back against efforts to eliminate Black congressional districts.

The Gulf States Newsroom’s Drew Hawkins, Joseph King, and Elise Gregg have been following the movement across the region.

This weekend, voters, religious leaders, politicians and Civil Rights activists gathered in Alabama as part of the National Day of Action for Voting Rights — all in response to the weakening of the Voting Rights Act in the Supreme Court’s decision in Louisiana v. Callais.

In Selma, Alabama, the pews of the Historical Tabernacle Baptist Church in Selma were full on Saturday (May 16), the church reverberating with song and prayer, ahead of a march across the Edmond Pettus Bridge — the site of the first voting rights march in 1965.

The GSN team was blown away by thoughtful answers, including a strong emphasis on investment in education, youth, families and leadership. We’re excited to bring more of those stories to you— and please sound off in the comments with feedback about future coverage! Thanks to for your partnership in this work
