Sharing our journey raising these two T.seladonia (Brazilian Jewel) slings, Kaleido and Piñata.
For many keepers this is often a dream spider so we wanted to record our husbandry as we raise them up. These babies are not cheap so losing one would suck.
Hopefully this little project can be useful for someone researching before their first jewel, to learn from our mistakes/successes before the big purchase!
Week #1 notes:
1. Two 1/2" slings arrived last Wednesday, we prepared spider vials (3" tall about 1.75" wide) with cross ventilation and extra ventilation on the top lid.
2. One inch of dry substrate (50/50 cocofiber peatmoss mix), small piece of loose corkbark with 4-5 holes made with a small drill bit. Ideally they will use a pre-made hole as their trapdoor, added dry chopped up moss on top of the substrate they can use.
Day 1 - Right after we put them in their vials, they circled, climbed all over the cork, exploring most of the day. We gave the tiniest mist from far away, most of the droplets landed on the lid and wall of the vial. They drank right away.
Day 3 - Piñata spends most of the day on top of his corkbark, we guided them gently with a brush towards the holes but would always return back to the top. Kaleido has found one of the holes and started on some light webbing. Their abdomens are slightly smaller but not concerning. We decided to put a couple golden hydei fruitflies in each vial, at the end of next day, neither had eaten any.
Day 5 - Both abdomen are about the same width as their carapace so they are definitely hungry now. We misted like before and they both circled and drank from the droplets. Held beetle larva (4-5mm) with rounded tongs infront of them and they both ran away. 10 minutes later we attempted with a smaller larva (3-4mm) but pinched the head this time, they both poked at it then backed up slightly. Seconds later Piñata snatched the larva, Kaleido did not so we left it at the entrance of the hole. Minutes later he/she started eating. After they finished, we offered another and both took after showing same behavior. Relieved.
Stay tuned for updates!
