Finally watched this new film version, as I've been hesitant after hearing they cut it down to less than 2 hours from an original 3-hour cut! Annnnd...the majority of my like-minded vampire movie / Stephen King fans were right: Despite some great acting, music and cool 1970s setting, the quick editing/pace was too rushed and choppy, and it gets noticeably more rushed as the film goes along.

And it's really too bad because the first 45 minutes of this is the BEST live action version of the novel made so far. I was impressed at first! (Although I'm not a fan of the use of opening credit scenes using a ton of newspaper clippings as exposition). I liked the casting. Lewis Pullman may be my favorite Ben Mears so far! The cool 1970s setting and music and vibe...

But...before even an hour in I felt the "jump" to stuff that felt too fast, and the 2nd hour, especially the last 30 minutes, were a sprint to the finale that absolutely gutted the third act, and made it not all that powerful, and had I been someone who didn't know the novel, would have made me ask "Did I miss something? Have weeks gone by or something?"

WHY they edited this down to a 2-hour runtime, when its original cut was a 3-hour one is beyond me, especially as it WASN'T a theatrical release. Since this is streaming, why cut so much out? The amount of character development and side stories feel sorely missing from this. And both previous live action versions (1979 and 2004) were both 3 hours! Although both had their problems, at least their stories made more sense. It seems like we just can't ever get a great version of this story :-(

Now, I WILL give this a 2nd chance IF they release the original 3 hour version...kind of like Needful Things finally got its proper 3-hour cut released!

*No Spoilers* I saw Superman a 2nd time in the theater, and I enjoyed it even more. The first time I thought it was good, the 2nd time I thought it was great! Is it perfect? No, and I’ve got my criticisms, especially as I’m a picky person when it comes to Superman (and many superheroes). But for me, it’s the best superhero film I’ve seen since Guardians of the Galaxy 3 (I admit I haven’t seen Fantastic Four yet – hoping to this week!). But I REALLY think if you’re a Superman or DC fan you should see it in the theater, as it’s definitely a “BIG SCREEN” movie!

For my 2nd viewing, what I noticed the most was how FUN the movie is and how it’s really happening more in a “comic book world” than many other superhero movies today. It’s early in Superman’s overall career, and he comes across as someone who is genuinely good and wants to save people, even if he’s still naïve in some areas. The true depth of evil by someone like Lex Luthor is almost beyond his comprehension. I also loved seeing the “Justice Gang” of Guy Gardner, Mr. Terrific, and Hawkgirl – never thought I’d see all of them in a live screen movie!
My biggest criticism of the film is probably the pacing being a bit too quick and sometimes choppy. But I feel that was done to keep the film shorter. James Gunn talked about the long length of superhero movies these days (including his own Guardians 3) and he’s not wrong! This wasn’t a bloated film, and the action scenes were tight and didn’t go on endlessly long to where you feel you’re just watching a lot of digital showcasing.

And for those who boycotted it because they heard it was “woke,” well, joke’s on you. First, I don’t even think it IS what the far right considers woke. As I said in another post, the values and world of Superman here are the same as they’ve been, but people took James Gunn’s “immigrant” comments and went wild, and they don’t like his clever criticisms of Trump, so there you go. If we weren’t in this insanely divisive pollical and social media climate, no one would have cared.
Good movie – see it on the big screen!

Despite finding several big items I was looking for at the Comic-Con International a couple days ago, I think this small, inexpensive Atari magnet, that I wasn't even looking for, might be my favorite thing I got.
