Captain Rich from Reel Destiny Charters stopped by with an absolute once-in-a-lifetime catch—a massive Louvar weighing in at 182 lbs!

Louvar are incredibly rare pelagic fish, and it’s possible this one may qualify as a new Florida state record. What an unreal moment to witness here at Captain Hook’s.

“Got on some BIG Tampa Bay gag grouper today on the jig! 💥 💪. In my opinion, this is the most fun style of fishing you can do this time of year in the bay!
If you’re a pure meat hunter, this type of fishing during the near year long closure will only make you upset. However, if you’re a sport fisherman like myself that likes to throw big lures, feel the ferocious THUMP of a bite, and have a serious battle with an incredibly hard fishing fish, it’s hard to beat jig fishing for big Tampa Bay gags in Nov and Dec! And the best thing is, gags have had near zero fishing pressure for two years making them plentiful and eager to bite. 💥
When targeting these fish I use 2-4oz jig heads, 8” swim baits and at least 80lb braid with 80lb leader on heavy spinning gear with the drag absolutely hammered down. Anything lighter and you drastically decrease your chances of landing a truly big one. Last year around this time we landed at least one at or over 33” nearly every time we tried!
Don’t get me wrong, catching snook, redfish and big trout on the flats on light tackle is great but for the next couple of months I’ll definitely be adding some big gags into the routine … for those who dare. 😎👌.

Hooked on fall? You will be! Come enjoy the fall Redfish and Pompano runs along Florida’s Forgotten Coast. Franklin County’s artificial reef program expanded just in time for the fall fishing season thanks to the recent deployment of 65 custom-built, concrete pyramid-shaped units that were sunk offshore of St. George Island and Dog Island in August. The Forgotten Coast alone lays claim to 50 artificial reefs, located offshore from the Franklin County coastline.

Spanning from Alligator Point to Apalachicola, reefs provide a helpful habitat for hundreds of fish species that migrate through our region.
