Here’s a fun one currently on TV, web and radio! Swipe ⬅️ to hear the SFX and MX stems

It seems simple enough: cut some general fair sfx and mix it in. Dig deeper and you see every one of the fare videos in those bubbles conjures up emotions and a place of time to anyone who’s been to a fare and those memories have sounds. The VO also mentioned things you want to catch sonically as well. The sound design has to also be cohesive and hold up on it’s own. It quickly becomes a jigsaw puzzle.. either something is too literal, too ambiguous to cut through the mix, or overpowering the VO. Can you fit a muscle car revving in dirt in less than a second time and have it be comprehensible? We can answer that: nope. How about a roller coaster ride? Yes. Pigs? Absolutely. Fair games? Heck yes.

Always do live reviews no matter what. That last BOING? That was the result of trial and error during live review with agency, something that may not have happened if we just traded notes back and forth. Realtime collaboration is still king for us. That sfx makes us laugh every time, driving this years slogan home: “Find Your HAPPY!”

“A found-footage psychological thriller. After his brother Sean’s su***de, Tim, an aspiring filmmaker, uncovers Sean’s obsession with a deleted urban legend tied to a secret mind-control experiment. As Tim investigates, compiling Sean’s notes and interviewing family and friends, he suspects Sean was murdered. With help from Sean’s friend Nicole, Tim’s search for truth spirals into obsession, unraveling his grief and revealing a chilling reality: “What We Fear, We Create.”

Here’s what supervising sound editor, Thomas, had to say: 

“We did a deep search into the many different recording mediums included in the film - from old destroyed film footage, to decaying VHS footage, to digital footage, it all had to feel real - but also cinematic. We had many deep discussions with the filmmakers, to truly understand all the mythology of the story and the psychological underpinnings of this Lovecraftian world. Keeping the growing disillusionment of our protagonist tangible, under the surface, was paramount. Our man Kennedy did an incredible job sound designing and exploring the many layers required to breathe life into the world, including using Slow Scan Television (SSTV) as a method to encode an important image into a sonic signal, which was a perfect easter egg for this kind of film. Many times in a found footage film the instinct might be to minimize the foley work, but we felt strongly that the opposite was necessary - a completely fully filled MnE pass would allow us the creative latitude to really become immersed in the scenes and become intimate as needed.”

CAPE, a non-profit organization championing Asian American and Pacific Islander voices held it’s 2024 short film showcase last weekend with Academy president Janet Yang and all filmmakers in attendance. We offered our facilities and were made sponsors so Hamed and his wife attended. Other sponsors include APM Music, Film Independent, Warner Chappel Music, AMC Theaters. What a great round of films with unique perspectives and stories! What you can do to support is follow all the tagged filmmakers and CAPE IG page. We all agree we crave original and thought-provoking films, well these filmmakers are the ones that will tell it 👏👏

We hosted the crew from The Plane Creative for the mix of this show back in Jan. The were looking for a stage located in Hollywood that could also meet their technical standards and we were able to deliver that AND plenty of parking to boot. Sound sup, Jon, worked in our edit bay feeding last minute score changes to the stage, and mixer, Justin, effortlessly opened his predubs and get to work, thanks to our mix tech, Hamed.
