Fire forces Jump Creek Rec Area evacuation
A Marsing Rural Fire District official has clarified news of evacuations because of the Flat Top fire, which burned near Poison Creek Road and Jump Creek Road on Friday afternoon.
Assistant Fire Chief Lynn Bowman praised the work of Owyhee County Sheriff's Deputy Angel Juarez for his work to get people out of the Bureau of Land Management Jump Creek Recreation Area.
Bowman said no residential evacuations were necessary.
The cause of the fire has not been confirmed, but it's speculated that a spark from machinery being used in area may have ignited the blaze.
The fire was reported at 390 acres Friday evening.
Earlier Friday, The Owyhee Avalanche misinterpreted Sheriff Larry Kendrck's text statement "the Jump Creek area has evacuated though" to mean a residential area.
The fire was reported before 12:30 p.m. about 1.5 miles southeast of the Poison Creek Road and Jump Creek Road intersection.
At the time, Kendrick said the possibility of residential evacuations depends on residents" proximity to the fire.
A deputy reported to dispatchers that structures were threatened.
Tankers made air drops to fight the fire, according to video posted to social media by Marsing Fire.

Senior citizens prom planned
A Homedale restaurant has stepped up to keep at least one tradition going for Homedale’s senior citizens.
The fourth annual Senior Citizens Prom is scheduled to run from 5 p.m., to 7 p.m., on Saturday, May 30 at The Breakfast Café, 6 N. Main St.
Then-Homedale Senior Center coordinator Melissa Sorlien originated the prom in 2022.
This year’s prom will have a ’50s them, and attendees are asked to “dress appropriately.”
Food, music and fun are promised.
Former senior center board member Brian Garrison announced on social media that The Breakfast Café owners will provide food and take photos. Anyone willing to help out was encouraged to contact Garrison on Facebook.
The prom is at least the second attempt in recent months to create a social event for the senior citizens who have lost access to the senior center at 224 W. Idaho Ave.
On the afternoon of April 29, the Hoppin’ Into Spring Social Event was supposed to be held at The Ranch on West Idaho Avenue.
The Ranch is now in the location of the former Fishers Saloon.
