TIPS TO REMEMBER ABOUT TAGS/INSURANCE......
Whenever you have Georgia based insurance coverage, your insurance company reports directly to the state when coverage starts and when it ends or lapses. If you have an active tag on the vehicle, the state system recognizes that the car is possibly being operated without insurance coverage. You are sent a letter charging you a $25 fine for the lapse, and you must pay it by the deadline on the letter. If you do not respond, the state will suspend your tag and charge you an additional $60 to reinstate it. If your car has been sold or is currently inoperable or parked and you drop your insurance, you need to contact the Tag Office and make your tag inactive until you get ready to get your insurance reinstated, fix the car and put it back on the road. Once coverage is back on the vehicle, you will again need to contact the tag office to reactivate your tag. This needs to be done every time your coverage is dropped to avoid fines and penalties.

LONG POST BUT PLEASE READ TO POSSIBLY SAVE MONEY...
The Georgia Governor and Legislature have again passed the Homestead Tax Relief Grant for the Tax Year 2026. This will give all homeowners significant savings on the 2026 property taxes on their home if they are signed up for homestead exemption. To qualify for homestead, you must own the land and home in which you live, and you must have owned it and resided in it on January 1, 2026. The last time this grant was given, homeowners saved up to $598.70 on their property tax bill. The amount will depend on the millage rate for the year, so don't think this amount is what may be given again this year. Also, this is a one time savings unless it is passed by the Legislature in future years. The Homestead Relief Grant does not apply to rental, commercial or personal property.
If you are not signed up for homestead exemption, you have one more opportunity to sign up for 2026. As soon as you receive your tax assessment notice, which should go out within the next few weeks, you will have a 45 day window in which to go to the Tax Assessor's office and sign up. The deadline will be on the assessment notice. Once the deadline passes, you will not be able to sign up for tax year 2026, and you will miss the chance to receive the extra savings for this year. If you are already signed up for homestead, there is nothing you need to do unless you have moved to a new home and you never signed up at the new home. We all know that property taxes are high, so please do not miss this opportunity to save some money!!

County property tax bills were mailed on February 13th. HOWEVER, if you filed an appeal on your property, I am holding your bill. Some have already settled, so I wanted to adjust the bill to reflect the new fair market value. Do not be alarmed. You will be given 60 days to pay the bill. It is just taking me a little while to manually rebill the approximately 300 appeals that were filed.

Finally, our 2025 county property tax bills were mailed on Friday, February 13, 2026. Unfortunately, it appears that on bills where previous years are due, the back tax amount may be incorrect. Possibly, the amount showing in the back tax portion of the bill does not show interest and penalties that have accrued since the original due date. Therefore, if you owe taxes from previous years, please call our office to verify the total due on your account.
What a tax year! I know we will ALL be glad when this one is over! As always, we appreciate your patience.
