Aircrew lore: the minute you make plans for a layover, your schedule will change ✈️

I had my first downtown Chicago layover completely planned out…until I got rerouted and spent 5 hours at Midway instead.

Random and last-minute schedule changes can happen when you’re out on the line. Flights change, crews get repositioned, and sometimes you end up somewhere completely different than originally planned. It’s just part of airline crew life.

But sometimes a reroute works out better than the original plan. I ended up in Pittsburgh, where my son goes to school, and got an unexpected chance to have dinner with him. 👍

Chicago can wait. I’ll take this layover any day instead.

PDX Layover: Bid or Pass? ✈️🌲

Portland has its pros and cons.

🥟 Dumplings
🍗 Fried Chicken
🍸 Speakeasy
🚶 And a walk through downtown that got a little… interesting. 👀

Some parts of Portland were awesome. Others changed FAST from block to block.

So after exploring as much as I could on this layover, I gave Portland my final score… ✈️

PIT Layover: Bid or Pass? ✈️

This one had a little extra meaning.

I’d already spent most of the week in Pittsburgh moving Parker into his college house. I flew home to PHX for about 24 hours…only to work an airline trip right back to PIT. ✈️

But this time I was getting paid to be there—and I got one more day to hang out with my son before heading back to work. That alone earned this layover a few bonus points. 💙💛

Pittsburgh continues to surprise me. Great neighborhoods, tons to do, good food, and IMO, a seriously underrated city.

So how did PIT score—and would I bid this layover again?

Travel Day ✈️ Az to Pitt. The long way. Dropping my son off at college and moving him into his 126 year old house. H2P.

Flying the F-16 was the baseline.

Aircraft control, formation, navigation, shooting an ILS to minimums—you had to be able to do those things second nature at the end of every mission.

Your real focus and attention was on tactics, threats, weapons, your formation, fuel, timing and getting to the target at precisely the right moment.

I sometimes explain it like this: imagine doing a CrossFit workout while quarterbacking an offense, solving problems in real time…while having people shoot at you.

Flying the airplane was just one piece of being a fighter pilot. Executing the mission was the job.

Today - as an airline pilot, safely flying and managing the airplane is the mission.

Two very different kinds of flying. Pretty fortunate to have done both. 🇺🇸

NYC Layover. Bid or Pass? ✈️🗽

What I did, how I rated it, and whether I’d bid this layover again.

I only had about 4 hours to explore Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn. I walked the Brooklyn Bridge, hit Washington Street in DUMBO, explored Brooklyn Heights, and grabbed some NYC pizza. 🍕

Not bad for a layover.
