More about our cover:

Pow! Wow! artist Tatiana Suarez's "Things to Come" multimedia on canvas was "extremely cathartic" to create. Inspired by the "colorful flora and fauna found in Hawai'i, especially the ōhiŹ»a lehua," Suarez wanted to convey the many thoughts of "overwhelming uncertainty and sadness" in this piece while carefully crafting the message of "growth and joy, recharged and ready to bloom" for the year.

Suarez used house paint for the background, oil paint, and some aerosol for accents. She started this piece in February of this year in Miami, Florida, and later shipped it over to Bishop Museum where she completed it in May before revealing it alongside other Pow! Wow! artist creations.

Get your copy of our new issue of The Hawai'i Herald today to read more about the Pow! Wow! exhibit out on display now at the until September 19.

ā€œI was a young man in my twenties who had not grown out of being a college student. I was still a fun, happy go lucky, directionless fellow who hadn’t really found his niche. The walk made me realize that there was a lot more going on in this world than I realized, and I vowed I would return someday and complete the entire route.ā€ Hackler’s second walk would only deepen what he had learned in the first pilgrimage; its lessons reverberate gently throughout his life even to this day. Read the rest of Hackler’s story ā€œSHIKOKU’S 88-TEMPLE PILGRIMAGE: A JOURNEY TO THE SELFā€ by subscribing to The Hawaiā€˜i Herald online. See link in bio.
