It was 101 degrees when we walked in and 56 at the bottom. Carlsbad Caverns is the only park we've been to where the forecast doesn't matter.

A few things we wish we'd known: that $1 reservation online isn't your ticket, you still pay at the visitor center. Most people take the elevator down and skip the best part. And you can't film the bat flight at all — phones and cameras are banned.

We also hit Guadalupe Mountains that morning, 40 minutes away, and almost nobody visiting Carlsbad knows it's there. Those peaks are a 260 million year old reef, and the cave is that same reef from the inside.

We spent two days in Big Bend National Park in 105° heat to find out what's actually worth your time when the desert is trying to cook you alive.

Five stops made the cut — Santa Elena Canyon, Tuff Canyon, Sotol Vista, the Chisos Basin, and the Window — in the exact order you should drive them.

Summer is the season nobody recommends for Big Bend. It works, but only if you understand the timing.

Dipping my toe into astrophotography.

Big Bend has some of the darkest skies in the country, so I figured there was no better place to try it for the first time. Tripod, manual focus on a bright star, 20-second exposures, and a lot of blurry, star-trailed throwaways before anything came out right.

These two are the first night shots I've ever taken that I'm actually happy with. Nowhere near perfect, but I'm hooked.

Any tips from the astro folks, I'm listening.

Is 48 hours enough to do New Orleans? 🌆

We spent a weekend finding out — beignets, brass bands, a streetcar through the Garden District, and one very controversial opinion about Café Du Monde vs. Café Beignet. 👀

We hit Jackson Square, the French Market, the National WWII Museum, Bourbon Street in daylight (an experience), and the best po'boys we've had in a while. Then we answered the real question: if a weekend is all you've got, is New Orleans worth it?

Spoiler: the answer surprised even us.
