The USS Johnston (DD-557) was a Fletcher-class destroyer commissioned in 1943, named after Lieutenant John V. Johnston, who died in the Battle of the Coral Sea. It served in the Pacific during World War II, most notably in the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944.

During the Battle off Samar, the Johnston, heavily outgunned, made a courageous stand against the Japanese fleet, including the battleship Yamato, inflicting some damage despite overwhelming odds. The ship was severely damaged and sank on October 25, 1944, with most of its crew perishing.

Commander Ernest E. Evans, who led the defense, was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery. In 2019, the wreck of the USS Johnston was discovered at a depth of over 20,000 feet in the Philippine Sea, marking it as the deepest shipwreck ever found. The ship’s legacy is one of heroism and sacrifice in naval history.

The Marconi wireless room aboard the RMS Titanic, which was manned by two wireless operators: Harold Bride and Jack Phillips. These men were employed by the Marconi Company, not the White Star Line, and their main duties were to handle communication with other ships and shore stations, mostly for passenger messages.

On the night of the disaster, after the Titanic struck the iceberg, both Phillips and Bride worked tirelessly to send distress signals. They were responsible for sending out the ship’s famous “CQD” and later “SOS” calls, which were picked up by several ships, including the RMS Carpathia, which ultimately rescued survivors.

Harold Bride survived the sinking by managing to escape on an overturned lifeboat, where he remained until rescued. Jack Phillips, however, stayed at his post until the power went out and was never seen again.

Their role was crucial in alerting nearby vessels, and their dedication is remembered as a significant part of the tragic story of the Titanic

The Titanic’s binnacle was an essential navigational tool located on the ship’s bridge. A binnacle is a housing for a ship’s compass, ensuring that the compass is protected and remains functional despite the ship’s motion and environmental conditions. The Titanic had its binnacle placed prominently near the helm on the bridge, used by officers to steer the ship and ensure it stayed on course.

Key facts about the Titanic’s binnacle:

1. Structure and Placement: The binnacle was located on the forward bridge, close to the wheel. This allowed officers and the helmsman easy access to the ship’s compass and the steering controls.
2. Magnetism Compensation: Since ships are made of metal, a binnacle also contains devices called compensators (often in the form of adjustable magnets or iron spheres) that help counteract the magnetic influence of the ship’s structure on the compass. This ensures accurate navigation.
3. Role in the Disaster: The Titanic’s binnacle, like the rest of the bridge equipment, would have been in use on the night of the disaster as officers attempted to navigate the icy waters of the North Atlantic. When the iceberg was sighted, the helmsman would have consulted the binnacle compass as part of the evasive maneuvers.

In underwater explorations of the wreck, parts of the ship’s bridge, including the binnacle, have been identified, though much of the original structure has deteriorated due to the harsh conditions on the ocean floor.
