Before “Filipino American” became an identity, there were the Sakadas, the first Filipino contract workers who arrived in Hawai‘i in 1906.
Recruited to work in sugar plantations under labor contracts, they came with hopes of better opportunity but faced long hours, low wages, and harsh conditions.
Still, they built the foundation of the Filipino community in Hawai‘i which as a result planting not only sugarcane, but stories of resilience, unity, and sacrifice.
If you are curious to know if your great grandparents were a Sakada, go to the BYU Library Digital Collections! It is also important to note down that not all people has a family lineage to Sakada, some migration stories may due to education, another form of contract but all this is found just by asking our family those questions!
