Ann Teranishi played a pivotal leadership role during the COVID-19 crisis, helping American Savings Bank navigate unprecedented financial risks while continuing to support customers, employees, and the broader Hawai‘i community. Although she was not CEO at the time, her strategic leadership proved critical to the bank’s stability and resilience. Most recently, Teranishi helped lead American Savings Bank through its historic transition from Hawaiian Electric Industries ownership to becoming an independent, investor-owned Hawaii bank in December 2024, marking a major milestone in the institution’s history.

The "college or bust" narrative is shifting in Hawai‘i, and Gen Z is leading the way. 🔧

Young pragmatists across the islands are choosing trade careers over traditional four-year degrees, and many are making more money than their college-educated peers while carrying zero student debt.

The numbers tell the story:
📊 Only 43% of Hawai‘i college grads have jobs requiring bachelor's degrees (lowest in the US)
💰 Hawai‘i ranks 50th nationally in earnings at every education level
🎓 32% of projected job openings will pay a living wage
🛠️ Trade careers often start at $85K-$100K+ annually

"The reality is that our economy relies heavily on those trades positions," says Anna Pacheco, CEO of AE Consulting. "We're at an inflection point where we need to get students into those careers."

While higher education remains valuable, quicker and more direct routes are launching Hawai‘i's young adults into rewarding careers with fewer financial risks. In uncertain economic times, that's a massive advantage.

For Nick Clemons, the park’s chief of interpretation, education and volunteers, it’s a dream job. “I have just been blown away by everything this park has to offer, from the summit down to the sea in Kīpahulu,” he says.
