(8/22 5AM HST) TROPICAL STORM MOKE STRENGTHENS A LITTLE...EXPECTED TO PASS SOUTH OF HAWAI’I

Heavy rainfall and gusty winds expected to begin tonight on the Big Island with rain spreading westward across the remainder of the Hawaiian Islands Sunday into Monday.

Although the strongest winds associated with Moke are expected to pass south of Hawai’i, strong gusty winds are likely, particularly in areas within and downslope of higher terrain. Swells generated by the storm may cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.

(Updates 8/16 6PM). CLOSURES FOR MONDAY, PALI OPEN

🏤In response to Hurricane Lala, all non-essential offices and services will be closed Monday, August 17, 2026

🏤Governor Josh Green announced that due to the severe impacts of Hurricane Lala, all state and county offices, Hawaii State Department of Education schools, public charter schools, courts and Judiciary offices statewide will be closed Monday, August 17. Nã’alehu Elementary School will remain closed through Thursday, Aug. 20, because of storm-related damage and road closures affecting safe access. Families will receive updates directly from their schools.

✏️All Hawaii public schools will be closed Monday due to Hurricane Lala impacts All HIDOE public schools and offices statewide will be closed Monday, Aug. 17.
The additional closure will allow time to complete campus safety assessments, restore utilities where necessary and address storm-related impacts.
The Department will continue working with county and state partners and will provide updates regarding Tuesday’s operations as additional information becomes available. Previously announced extended closures on Hawaii Island remain in effect.

🚙The Honolulu Police Department has opened the townbound lanes of Pali Highway from Castle Junction to Waokanaka Street. The Kailua-bound lanes remain closed. Please use alternate routes and avoid the area if possible.

⛈️Tropical Storm Warnings (except for Kauai) are cancelled. Flash Flood Warnings for Oahu have been cancelled too.

⚡️HECO: About 130,100 mostly in portions of Leeward Oahu, Windward Oahu and Honolulu remain without power. Nearly 141,000 customers had their power restored.

⚠️The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flash Flood Warning for...The island of Oahu in Honolulu County Until 545 PM HST.

At 252 PM HST, Doppler radar indicated a band of heavy rain moving over the windward side of Oahu, focused over the Koolau Mountains. Rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 2.5 inches per hour. Waiahole and Manoa Streams are elevated once again. Flash flooding is
ongoing or expected to begin shortly. Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor
drainage and low-lying areas. Some locations that will experience flash flooding include...
Honolulu, Waipio, Waiahole, Waikane, Kahaluu, Ahuimanu, Aiea, Pearl
City, Halawa, Moanalua, Mililani and Salt Lake

This video was shot by a listener this morning in Ewa on Oahu. Lala is moving away from the islands and the latest forecast is below tropical storm force winds. Over the past 3 hours the heaviest rainfall associated with Tropical Storm Lala occurred over the island of Oahu. 3 hourly rainfall totals on the windward side of Oahu have exceeded 2 inches in multiple locations. Outer rain bands from Lala have the potential to bring periods of heavy rain to Maui County, Oahu, and Kauai County through the afternoon. pc: Cheree Tauvela Wee
