Experience the feeling of a getaway while shopping for high-quality gifts and souvenirs, beachwear and accessories, ready-to-wear fashion and more at Golden Trip by Bikinibird, which opened in Kailua in December.

“I was making a ton of merch with destinations and wanted to create a concept that was related to travel and all things that went beyond swim — expanding into more kids, mens and jewelry (items),” explains owner Tiana Gamble. “Golden Trip is an elevated offshoot of Bikinibird. The idea that you can come into the shop and get more than swim and coverups. The goal is to have products that are related to Kailua and what locals love.”

Le Jardin Academy has 900 students and counting. Since 1961, the school has been part of the Kailua community, with the main campus off Kapa‘a Quarry Road and the preschool off Kailua Road. Now, the time has come to unite the preschool with the main campus and add an Arts and Innovations Center in a campaign called the One Build Project.

If you’ve been to Kailua Farmers Market, you’ve likely encountered Grandma G’s Ono Grindz, a beloved family-owned business that serves up delicious comfort food with two scoops of aloha. Loyal regulars and vacationing visitors alike flock to the eatery’s stand and, yes, wait in the classic long line for fresh fish offerings, including Spicy Blackened ‘Ahi, Furikake ‘Ahi, and Panko Crusted ‘Ahi.

“The Panko Crusted ‘Ahi is by far the best-seller, with its crispy, flavorful coating making it a crowd favorite,” says co-owner Robyn Ishiaka.

For almost two decades, a seemingly simple but incredibly powerful tool has been helping a hundred or more young people a year become the teens they can be. The Kailua-based nonprofit Surfrider Spirit Sessions has been teaching teens to surf along with ocean safety, Hawaiian cultural values and the power of mentorship.

The organization was founded by a group of passionate Kailua residents, mostly women leaders, led by Cynthia DeRosier, author of The Surfer Spirit.

Even in the age of streaming platforms, going to the movies remains one of life’s great pleasures. For many, the large-screen experience is the perfect, immersive way to watch a story unfold. It’s also a chance to escape daily life, if only for a few hours, while sitting in a spacious setting and sharing popcorn, soft drinks and favorite snacks, like M&Ms or Skittles, with loved ones.

Kailua has been fortunate enough to be home to multiple movie theaters over the years. At its peak in the ’90s, the town boasted four such brick-and-mortar operations along with a drive-in. Today, all but one of them remains: Kailua Cinemas — a luxury, first-run movie complex located in Enchanted Lake Center.

Manuheali‘i has been perpetuating Hawaiian culture and lifestyle through its aloha-inspired fashion ever since it was first established in 1985. The biz is committed to authentic artistry, quality design and meaningful cultural connections.

“Our patterns reflect the manaʻo and memories of our people,” says marketing manager Randie Lunn.

Owners Danene and Pono Lunn started their company with three Hawaiian quilt designs that were silk screened on T-shirts, pillows and canvas tote bags. Throughout the years, the business has evolved into a multifaceted creative company whose work spans from graphic and textile designs for clothing, accessories and home goods.

You never go to the same beach twice. Wave action and weather patterns constantly change a shoreline’s features. Kailua Beach Park has seen its sand pushed mauka over the years due to wind, rise in sea level and lack of native plant life.

To save this beloved beach, many teams must join forces to restore and protect the area, including the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), Hawai‘i Sea Grant, the Department of Land and Natural Resources Office of Conservation and Coastal Lands (OCCL), and the community of Kailua.

The DPR works with OCCL and Hawai‘i Sea Grant to conduct routine sand pushing on beaches around O‘ahu. The current area of focus on Kailua Beach is specifically the section between Ka‘elepulu Stream and the boat ramp.

Wind frequently pushes the sand in this section up and away from the sea toward the parking lot. The project aims to “Put the sand back on the active beach area, and use low-lying vegetation … to stabilize the sand once it’s been reshaped again,” says Amy Wirts of Hawai‘i Sea Grant.

Learn more about this joint effort to save the Kailua shoreline from erosion in "Saving A Beach," in the spring issue of Go Kailua magazine.
