Honolulu’s buildings tell their own story. Everywhere you look, churches, civic halls or artwork reflect the decades between World War II, statehood and the jet age — an era that left a lasting mark on the city’s character.
Enter Docomomo Hawai‘i, a nonprofit that exists to honor that moment in time, and ensure these spaces remain part of our everyday lives for years ahead.
Founded in 2012, Docomomo Hawai‘i is part of an international effort known as the Documentation and Conservation of the Modern Movement. But for Graham Hart, the chapter’s president, it’s easier to explain in simpler terms: “I like to tell people it’s a fan club for modernist architecture enthusiasts,” he says.
