The resolution has been referred to the House Education Committee. If you would like to support this resolution right now, contact these two representatives and tell them you want HR105 or HCR109 placed on their agenda.

Two resolutions related to student journalism, HR105 and HCR109, have been referred to the your committee. I urge you to hear them. These resolutions concern an issue student media advisers and student journalists have been concerned about for a long time and outreach to the DOE has not been effective. This issue deserves a chance to be discussed in a public forum on the record.

As a student journalist myself, I wished more people who aren’t in news writing understand how important journalism can be.

There is so much stigma around the news writing/journalism community in general, due to the constant misinformation and the unreliable news writing companies. As a student journalist I have learned the impact I can cause within my community as a whole. I’ve written mental health articles and I’ve gotten people at school saying how they loved it and how glad I talked about it, people getting excited seeing friends in the articles we write or even teachers getting excited.

I remember reading the comments on the Star Advertiser when someone reported on the HHSJA competition, and many people saying how there are more “fake” journalists getting into the field which is just not true. We had to go through a whole process to get where we are now. From learning the ethics, laws, how to write and report. The things I’ve seen other student journalists do are just amazing, and people should appreciate more or at least understand how student journalism is beneficial not just for the students, but the community.

What role does investigative journalism play in uncovering corruption?

Investigative journalism plays a crucial role in uncovering corruption by serving as a watchdog that holds individuals, organizations, and governments accountable for unethical practices. Investigative journalists often dig deep into complex issues, uncovering corruption that might otherwise remain hidden. Investigative journalists often target those in positions of power—politicians, corporate executives, law enforcement officials—who might be involved in corrupt practices. By reporting on corrupt practices, investigative journalism educates the public, shining a light on issues that affect society. ✏️Malia Manuel

How are Gen Z and young Millennials redefining the landscape of journalism?

Gen Z is significantly reshaping the journalism landscape by introducing new approaches to both content creation and consumption. There is a multitude of ways we are going about this.
For example, there is an emphasis on digital and social media in how we spread and consume our news in this generation. Something interesting that comes out of this is Citizen Journalism, due to our use of smartphones. People are empowered to share first-hand accounts of events and breaking news. Journalism is increasingly relying on these platforms for real-time updates and engagement, with a focus on short-form content and visually engaging formats. A common example of The Pinion using this form of journalism is when we take pictures firsthand of students reading our newspaper! ✏️Malia Manuel

What are the specific freedoms protected by the First Amendment, and why are they important?

The specific freedoms protected by the First Amendment are freedom of PRESS, religion, assembly, and petition. In this picture, it is shown to be a group of people assembling and speaking for their rights. This is important as it allows the public to speak up for what they believe is right and to have a say in how our government and world works today. Of course, the word cannot get across without the freedom of press, which is the right for journalists like us to publish information, thoughts and opinions without restraint/censorship. The First Amendment protects our rights as people to speak and make our thoughts be known and made into fruition.
