A vigil in support of Palestine was held last night in front of Bachman Hall at the University of Hawaiʻi. The event was held to commemorate the lives lost in Palestine.

This vigil – held shortly after the one-year mark of the Israel-Hamas war beginning, on Oct. 7, 2023 – was put together by Students and Faculty for Justice in Palestine (SFJP).

“Tonight is about holding space. At this vigil we want to share our grief and our hope for the future,” Sonja Giardina, the ASUH Senator for School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) said.

Gardenia also discusses the Pro-Palestine rally held by SFJP earlier that day in the campus center, at which dozens of students and faculty were in attendance.

The Warrior Recreation Center celebrated their 10-year anniversary at their indoor courts Tuesday afternoon.

The celebration event provided free food and t-shirts for students. There were also 10 mini games and challenges that students could participate in, such as cup stacking, free throw, ten push ups and one-minute planks, to enter a raffle for a $25 UHM bookstore gift card.

“It means a lot to me,” Julia Beatty, an informal recreation graduate assistant, said. “I’ve been working at the WRC ever since I was a freshman, so about three years, so for people to come together as a community and just appreciate just the different activities and just our workers as a whole.”

The WRC opened in April 2014. It was a $47 million project funded in part by a student fee that has been is place since 2007.

The Rainbow Warriors were swept Friday night by UC Irvine in the Big West Men’s Volleyball Tournament, ending the season for Hawai’i as they presumably will not pick up an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.

Despite a 36-34 set, Hawai’i gave up too many leads across the entire night to ensure a trip for a chance at an automatic qualifier. Louis Sakanoko and Keoni Thiim led the team in kills, 12 and 11 respectively.

Hawaiʻi advances to The Big West Men’s Volleyball Tournament Semi-Finals after the 3-1 victory over the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos. The ‘Bows hit at .360, led by senior Alakaʻi Todd’s 13 kills. Middle blocker Kurt Nusterer missed all but one of his kill attempts (7-8) with two service aces.

The semi-finals kick off tomorrow, as Hawaiʻi plays UC-Irvine for the fourth time this season. UH leads the season series, 2-1 so far.
