At the PCATT Pacific Center for Advanced Technology Training 2026 Summit, educators, students, technology professionals, community leaders, and industry partners came together to share perspectives on AI, education, workforce development, and lifelong learning in Hawaiʻi.

One theme comes through clearly: AI can be a valuable tool for learning and professional development, but using it responsibly requires education, collaboration, experimentation, and a willingness to keep learning. The conversations also highlight the importance of making emerging technology accessible and relevant to people throughout Hawaiʻi.

Donna Kohls of The American Dream TV meets some of the competitors from the Raising Cane’s Going to the Dogs SurFur Competition, part of Duke Kahanamoku OceanFest.

🐕 Puka, with Brantly Baynes, is a rescue with a special story—and she knows how to catch a wave.

🏄 Church, with James Pamlin, comes from Maui representing Lahaina and has been surfing since he was about six weeks old.

🐕 Ozzie, with Devyn Lum, came from California for his first year competing in Waikīkī.

🏄 Gnarly Dawg, with Patrick Staiger, started on small bodyboards and worked his way up to an 11-foot board.

Four dogs, four stories, and plenty of time on the waves.

This year’s Going to the Dogs SurFur Competition is August 20, from 8 AM to 3 PM at Baby Queens in Waikīkī.

It started with three dogs and a pig. 🐕🏄

Donna Kohls of The American Dream TV catches up with Kelly Bullock Hergert, organizer of the Raising Cane’s Going to the Dogs SurFur Competition, part of Duke Kahanamoku OceanFest in Waikīkī.

Back in 2015, the competition started with just three dogs and a pig. The following year brought 16 dogs, a pig, and even a cat. By 2025, 26 different dog teams were taking to the waves in solo and tandem competition.

It’s one of the most fun events to watch on Waikīkī Beach—and these dogs can seriously surf. 🐾🌊

This year’s competition is August 20, from 8 AM to 3 PM at Baby Queens in Waikīkī.

Thinking about college, returning to school, or exploring a new career path in Hawaiʻi? There’s still time to get started this fall.

The University of Hawaiʻi has extended the Fall 2026 application deadline to August 14 for nine campuses, including Honolulu Community College and all seven UH community colleges, UH Hilo, and UH West Oʻahu. Fall classes begin August 24.

Our video takes you inside Honolulu Community College, where students and faculty share their experiences with career-focused education, hands-on learning, internships, flexible classes, academic advising, student resources, and preparing for the workforce.

You’ll hear from students Mary Joy Plan, Brittanie Howard, Lisa Canionero, Madison Miller, Joshua Jackson, Kawailani Abraham, and Matthew Goldman, along with faculty Alapaki Luke, Kara Kam-Kalani, Coty Gonzales, Jeff Schultz, Derek Otsuji, and Louis Maghanoy III.

Their stories show that there isn’t just one path to college. Some students continue their education after high school, while others return after time in the workforce or balance college with work and family.

For Lahaina fire survivor Busaba Yip Douglas, participating in the Mauiwes - UH Maui Wildfire Exposure Study was about more than receiving test result, it was about understanding her health and finding a path forward.

After taking part in the study, Busaba learned more about potential areas of concern, received practical guidance on reducing the effects of heavy metal exposure, and gained valuable information to support her physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

Her story is a reminder that recovery doesn't end after the fire. Ongoing research and community support are helping Lahaina residents better understand the long-term impacts of the wildfire and make informed decisions about their health.
