Dillon Fire Update for September 2, 2025

Acres: 7,706
Containment: 7%
Personnel: 827

Extreme fire activity is expected today with hot, dry, unstable weather, and possible dry lightning forecast for this afternoon.

Temperatures are expected to be above 100 degrees. Relative humidity will be in the mid-teens, and wind gusts up to 30 miles an hour with the potential for higher gusts from thunder cells creating outflow winds are possible. Predicted weather increases the potential for spot fires throughout the day.

Air operations conducted water drops yesterday, and hand crews dug handline to tie the spot fire northeast of Dillon Creek Campground into the Klamath River.

Structures northeast of the spot fire have been prepped by the structure defense group with hose lays and sprinklers in place, operations will continue today.

Six fire crews, supported by helicopters, conducted operations between Forest Roads 14N21 and 13N13. Handlines and hose lays will be completed in the area today.

Firefighters are working closely with resource advisors and cultural resource specialists to ensure natural and cultural resources are protected.

Firefighting resources continue to arrive daily. With additional resources mobilizing in the area, traffic will increase on Highway 96.

There is limited one-way traffic control on Highway 96 at various locations from 10.7 miles west to 2.2 miles west of Cottage Grove due to fire operations. Debris is rolling into the roadway, and visibility remains low during early morning hours. Drive with caution.

Air quality can change quickly. Know your smoke risk and plan ahead: www.airnow.gov/wildfires.

REMINDER...School Bus and School Zone laws.

In California, you must stop for a school bus with flashing red lights and an extended stop arm, stopping at least 20 feet from the bus. All traffic must stop unless separated by an unpaved median or physical barrier. You must remain stopped until the lights stop flashing and the bus resumes motion.

SCHOOL ZONES

Driving in California school zones: A school zone is an area near a school or crosswalk marked by signs where a reduced speed limit of 20 mph is typically in effect, especially when flashing yellow lights or a school crossing guard indicates children are present. Drivers must slow down and be prepared to stop for children at crosswalks and must stop for school buses with flashing red lights until all children are out of the way. You will know you are in a school zone by posted signs, such as the yellow, five-sided school zone sign.

A Fire Weather Watch has been issued for the potential for dry thunderstorms in the interior Tuesday afternoon and evening. New fire starts are possible, and erratic, gusty outflow winds can spread fires quickly. This is combined with an already hot, dry, and breezy afternoon, which will allow for easier fire starts and quick spread.

Heat Forecast
Expect temperatures to start climbing on Monday for the inland areas of Northwest California, with the hottest weather arriving on Tuesday. High temperatures in the valleys are forecast to reach a sweltering 95 to 105 degrees F.
This heat will bring a Moderate HeatRisk to the interior regions from Tuesday through Wednesday. This means that people who are sensitive to heat, such as the elderly, children, and those with health issues, should take extra precautions to stay cool and hydrated.

Thunderstorm Potential
In addition to the heat, there is a slight chance for isolated thunderstorms to develop in the interior mountains on Tuesday, mainly in Trinity County. The main uncertainty lies in whether these storms develop across portions of interior Humboldt and interior Del Norte counties. We will provide updates as the forecast becomes clearer. Stay tuned!
