The Hopewell News & hopewellnews.com Local News Hidalgo hosts radio show By Ken Munson Aug 28, 2007, 10:15 Photo by Ken Munson. Plumber and business owner Luis "Sweet Lou" Hidalgo takes off from his day job to host the Latin Jazz Show on WHAP 1340 AM on Saturdays 2-6 p.m. Luis Hidalgo never envisioned a life in broadcasting. "I didn't start out with radio," says Hidalgo. "I didn't set out to be a deejay. I'm a plumber." And yet, for the past two years, this owner of a small plumbing business has found himself hosting an increasingly popular AM radio show. Formerly playing on WCLM in Richmond, and recently moving to Hopewell's WHAP 1340 AM, Luis "Sweet Lou" Hidalgo has been the host of the Latin Jazz Show. For someone who claims not to have sought out a career in radio, it sure seems like something he was born to do. Not only does the man have natural skills on a microphone, he also has a near-limitless enthusiasm and knowledge of his favorite types of music, which range from salsa to conga to mambo to reggaeton. "I'm a sponge," said Hidalgo. "If I wanna learn it, I never forget it." Hidalgo can not only trace the musical roots of every song he plays -- which can range from classic artists like Tito Puente and Ruben Blades to newer songs from Shakira and Carlos Santana -- his playlist comes entirely from his vast CD library, which he estimates to be worth tens of thousands of dollars. Hidalgo, who lives in Chester, is not from the Tri-Cities originally. In fact, his Brooklyn accent gives away his New York roots; he is in fact an NYC native, where he was raised by his Puerto Rican mother and Peruvian father. So how did a Brooklyn kid get to Virginia? It was 9/11, said Hidalgo, during which his wife was stuck in the tunnels and couldn't communicate with the rest of the family to tell anyone she was all right. That scary moment in history convinced him it was time to leave, so he moved the family and family business down to Richmond, where his brother lived. Hidalgo quickly re-established his company, Master and Sons Plumbing, but wondered about the possibility of getting more business. "I had passed by the WCLM station all the time," said Hidalgo. "Going on two years, I'd been wanting more advertising." It was there that he met Preston Brown, owner of the station and fellow enterpreneur. "I walked in there, I meet Mr. Brown," said Hidalgo. "He finds out I'm a small businessman, and he said, 'Why don't you buy some radio time?'" Brown also suggested, after listening to the man speak, that he had a great voice for radio and that Hidalgo should host the show himself. So he did, sponsoring and hosting the Latin Jazz Show in 2005. The show ran originally for just an hour on Sunday. Then Brown bumped him up for two hours for the same price. Shortly thereafter, Hidalgo got a third extra hour. Now, Hidalgo does not have to pay for his airtime at all and is looking to set up a studio in his home so that he can broadcast five days a week. According to Hidalgo, his is the only Latin show in the area. In fact, coming from the vibrant, thriving Latino community of the Big Apple to Virginia was a big shock for him. "The Latin community [here] is timid," said Hidalgo. "It reminds me of New York thirty years ago, maybe even New York forty years ago. In New York, you can't get elected without catering to the Latin community. In New York, diversity is the name of the game." That's part of the reason he's glad to have his radio show, which he said is growing ever more popular, with the online broadcast attracting emails from across the country. "It's a release, a getaway after a full week of hustling," said Hidalgo. The Latin Jazz Show with Sweet Lou is broadcast on WHAP 1340 from 2 to 6 p.m. on Saturdays. © Hopewell News, hopewellnews.com
