Like many African American families, sweet potatoes have always been a staple in ours. While some see them as seasonal, we’ve eaten them year-round for generations.

Our family’s sweet potato pie tradition began in Sardis, Mississippi with my great-grandmother Roberta Graham (Big Ma), passed down to my grandmother Birdie Shivers, and carried with us when the family migrated to Detroit in the 1960s.
