𝐇𝐎𝐑𝐍𝐄𝐋𝐋 𝐃𝐄𝐅𝐄𝐀𝐓𝐒 𝐒𝐘𝐑𝐀𝐂𝐔𝐒𝐄! The Hornell Steamers defeated the Syracuse Salt Cats 2-1 in the first game of a double header. When a double header is scheduled, each game is only 7 innings. The second of the game was postponed dur to rain in the 2nd inning with Hornell leading 1-0. Here is the 1st game recap: A dominant pitching performance and a timely fourth-inning rally, the Hornell Steamers earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Syracuse Salt Cats on Tuesday evening at Maple City Park. The win snapped a brief skid for the Steamers and showcased one of the club's strongest all-around pitching efforts of the young season. Syracuse struck first in the opening inning to put the Salt Cats up 1-0 lead. Despite allowing three hits in the frame, Hornell starter 𝐓𝐲 𝐕𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐥 (𝐒𝐔𝐍𝐘 𝐍𝐢𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐚) settled in quickly and never allowed another run. Vogel was outstanding over five innings, scattering six hits while striking out six and walking just one. Hornell finally broke through in the bottom of the fourth. 𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐞𝐥 𝐃𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐚𝐧 (𝐄𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐞) ignited the rally with a one-out double before 𝐄𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐭 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡 (𝐏𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐚 𝐏𝐢𝐭𝐳𝐞𝐫) lined a run-scoring double into the gap in right-center field to tie the game at 1-1. Moments later, 𝐓𝐚𝐲𝐥𝐨𝐫 𝐉𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐩𝐡 (𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐤) delivered a clutch RBI single up the middle, plating Heath and giving the Steamers their first lead of the night at 2-1. The Steamers collected seven hits on the evening, led by 𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐫 (𝐏𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐚 𝐏𝐢𝐭𝐳𝐞𝐫) who finished 2-for-3, Heath went 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored, and the game-tying RBI, while Duncan added a double and scored the eventual winning run. After Vogel's strong start, 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐱 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐳𝐳𝐚𝐧𝐨 (𝐇𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐫𝐭) was nearly untouchable out of the bullpen to earn the save. The right-hander allowed just one hit while striking out five. He struck out the side in the 6th and two in the 7th. Hornell pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts while allowing just one run. 𝐈𝐓𝐒 𝐎𝐅𝐅𝐈𝐂𝐈𝐀𝐋! Hornell's 𝐓𝐨𝐦 𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐲 officially retires from coaching. His coaching career spans decades and was one the founding forces behind the new era Hornell Dodgers in 1994. The photo below is his collections of the teams that he has either coached or managed! As head coach for the Dodgers, he holds the record for wins (101-44). Kenney led the Dodgers to three divisional titles and one league championship. In the league championship season, the Dodgers had a record setting 44-9 record. Besides his role in the Hornell Dodgers success, he was architect of the Alfred State baseball program as well, he brought baseball back to campus in the mid 1990’s. Tom led the Pioneers to a 645-342-2 overall record (.653 winning percentage). The Pioneers won five Region Championships (1997, 1999, 2001, 2003, and 2004), five WNYAC Championships (1997, 1999, 2001, 2002, and 2004), and a NY State Div. I Championship (2001) under Kenney. The program had 14 consecutive winning seasons and had a stretch of eight straight years with at least 40 wins including a program best 53 victories during the 2003-04 season. He was named Region III Coach of the Year six times and ranked 38th in active and 83rd all-time in NJCAA coaching victories upon his retirement. When at the Steamer games, be sure to stop and say hi. 𝐇𝐎𝐑𝐍𝐄𝐋𝐋 𝐅𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐒 𝐓𝐎 𝐃𝐀𝐍𝐒𝐕𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐄! 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐨 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐝 (𝐖𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫) delivered the biggest swing of the night with a go-ahead grand slam in the fifth inning, but a late surge by the Dansville Gliders proved too much for the Hornell Steamers in a 16-6 loss on Saturday evening. The Steamers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning despite not recording a hit. 𝐑𝐉 𝐅𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐞 (𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐲) scored on a fielder's choice by 𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐫 (𝐏𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐚 𝐏𝐢𝐭𝐳𝐞𝐫) before 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐰𝐨𝐨𝐝 (𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐤) added an RBI groundout to plate 𝐖𝐲𝐚𝐭𝐭 𝐀𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐢 (𝐁𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐋𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐧). Dansville answered quickly in the bottom half of the inning when Emmett McLean launched a two-run home run to even the score at 2-2. The Gliders took a 4-2 lead in the fourth, but Hornell responded in dramatic fashion in the fifth. After Parker doubled and the Steamers loaded the bases, Ballard crushed a grand slam to give Hornell a 6-4 advantage. The blast accounted for all four of his RBIs on the night and highlighted a strong offensive performance from the designated hitter. Dansville immediately battled back, scoring twice in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 6-6 before taking control with a six-run sixth inning. The Gliders added four more runs in the seventh to pull away. Ballard finished 2-for-3 with the grand slam and four RBIs, while Parker doubled and drove in a run. Greenwood added an RBI single, and the Steamers drew six walks despite being limited to four hits. Hornell starter 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐱 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐳𝐳𝐚𝐧𝐨 kept the Gliders off the board through the first two innings and struck out three over 3.1 innings of work. McLean led the Gliders offensively with three hits, including a home run, while Bobby Griffon collected two hits and two RBIs. Brady Hargraves added three RBIs as Dansville finished with 10 hits and 16 runs. 𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐀𝐌𝐄𝐑 𝐖𝐈𝐍 𝐎𝐍 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐑𝐎𝐀𝐃! The Hornell Steamers broke open a tight game with a three-run seventh inning and received strong pitching throughout the night to defeat the Horseheads Hitmen, 5-1, on Friday evening. After five scoreless innings, Hornell struck first in the sixth. 𝐍𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐧 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐩 (𝐏𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐚 𝐏𝐢𝐭𝐳𝐞𝐫) sparked the offense with a triple to right field and scored moments later on a sacrifice fly by 𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐞𝐥 𝐃𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐚𝐧 (𝐄𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐞) to give the Steamers a 1-0 lead. Horseheads answered in the bottom half of the inning when Julian Lamper-Turkisher delivered an RBI double to even the score at 1-1. The Steamers quickly regained control in the seventh. 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐰𝐨𝐨𝐝 (𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐤) opened the inning with a single before 𝐑𝐲𝐥𝐚𝐧 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐤𝐞𝐬 (𝐌𝐜𝐌𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐲) drew a walk. Following a fielder's choice, 𝐖𝐲𝐚𝐭𝐭 𝐀𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐢 (𝐁𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐋𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐧) lifted a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Greenwood and put Hornell back in front. Later in the inning, Winthrop came through again with an RBI single to plate Stokes and extend the lead to 3-1. Hornell added another run moments later when a wild pitch allowed Beno Ballard (Westminster) to score, giving the Steamers a comfortable 4-1 advantage. Hornell added an insurance run in the ninth. 𝐑𝐉 𝐅𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐞 (𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐲) singled, advanced to third on a Winthrop base hit, and then stole home to cap the scoring at 5-1. Winthrop paced the Steamers' offense, going 3-for-5 with a triple, RBI, run scored, and stolen base. Greenwood, Stokes, Fiore, Argentieri, and 𝐗 𝐅𝐞𝐧𝐠 (𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐨𝐧) each added a hit in Hornell's eight-hit attack. Argentieri and Duncan each drove in a run with sacrifice flies. On the mound, Evan LaMothe (Johnson & Wales) turned in a strong starting performance, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out five over 5.2 innings. 𝐆𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐬 (𝐌𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐲𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐭) earned the victory with 1.1 scoreless innings of relief, striking out three, while 𝐉𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐀𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡 (𝐂𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥) closed out the final two innings to record the save. 𝐇𝐎𝐑𝐍𝐄𝐋𝐋 𝐅𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐒 𝐈𝐍 𝐖𝐈𝐋𝐃 𝐒𝐄𝐀𝐒𝐎𝐍 𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐍𝐄𝐑! It is said that baseball is a game of runs. Well, last night was no different. The Horseheads Hitmen earned a wild 21-11 victory over the Hornell Steamers in the 2026 NYCBL opener for both teams. The teams combined for 32 runs, 22, hits and 12 errors. Horseheads opened up the game with a six-run 1st inning before Hornell answered with four of their own in the bottom of the inning. Hornell's 𝐍𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐧 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐩 (𝐏𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐚 𝐏𝐢𝐭𝐳𝐞𝐫) collected a two-RBI double and 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐰𝐨𝐨𝐝 (𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐤) followed with a RBI single to highlight the inning. Greenwood cut the lead to 6-5 in the 3rd when he hit a RBI ground out to second to plate 𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐞𝐥 𝐃𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐚𝐧 (𝐄𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐞). The Hitmen took control of the game with three consecutive four-run innings. They built a 18-5 lead after 6.5 innings. Hornell didn't go away and plated six runs in the bottom of the 7th. 𝐓𝐚𝐲𝐥𝐨𝐫 𝐉𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐩𝐡 (𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐤 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲) collected a two-run single and 𝐗 𝐅𝐞𝐧𝐠 (𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐨𝐧) had a RBI single in the big inning. Horseheads continued to apply pressure with three runs in the 8th to conclude the scoring. Keon Lamarge was 3 for 4 with 7 RBI, Mason Sanno was 2 for 6 with 4 RBI while Yahir Ortiz was 1 for 3 with five runs scored for the Hitmen. Luke Richards pitched five innings of relief to earn the victory. 𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐫 (𝐏𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐚 𝐏𝐢𝐭𝐳𝐞𝐫) led Hornell with a 3 for 5 day while Winthrop and Greenwood each drove in a pair. She won the 100 meter Hurdles (16.82), the 100 meter dash (12.27) and the 200 meter dash (26.28). She also was part of the Girls 4x100 relay team of 𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐚 𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐝𝐨, 𝐌𝐚𝐮𝐫𝐚 𝐊𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐤, & 𝐑𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐲 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐰𝐨𝐨𝐝. The team placed 2nd place (50.00). Hornell 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐬𝐨𝐧 took 3rd in the 400 meter dash (1:01.96), 2nd in the 400m hurdles and 4th in the high jump (4-10). 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐫 took 3rd in the 400m dash. 𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐲𝐧𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐱𝐨𝐧 and Cole placed 4th/5th in the 100m dash. Demayne alson took 3rd in the high jump! 𝐔𝐫𝐢𝐣𝐚𝐡 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭 took 2nd in the Discus.
