From the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet --- Traffic Advisory: Lane Closures on the US 31W Bridge Over Green River in Munfordville

Lane closures on US 31W in Munfordville are expected to impact traffic this week. The rotation of routine inspections arrives on the bridge over Green River beginning Monday, August 11th. Inspection will require varying traffic patterns as crews work their way across the bridge through Thursday. Lane closures will start at 7am Monday and Tuesday, and then at 8:30am Wednesday and Thursday, to allow peak morning traffic to pass with the beginning of school. Closures each day may last through 6pm. Work schedules may be affected by unfavorable weather.

We understand lane closures over such a vital connection can seem untimely and inconvenient, but they are necessary to assure a safe and efficient transportation infrastructure.

Flaggers will be conducting alternating one-way traffic around work crews. Motorists should play close attention to work zone directions, be prepared to stop and plan for the anticipated short delay in passing over the bridge.

The Horse Cave Southwestern Bypass is Set to Open Friday Morning, July 18th...

Final signage and striping were completed on Thursday and the short route connecting US 31W and KY 218 will open to traffic around 8am on Friday. The new road is designated as KY 3553.

Construction began in early 2024 after nearly a decade of planning by both local and state officials. The connector provides better access to and from Interstate 65 and industrial facilities, reduces the potential for railroad crossing collisions, and reduces costly wear and tear on existing streets which were not originally designed to handle such traffic movements.

Motorists are cautioned to expect new traffic patterns on the KY 218 and US 31W ends of the connector and anticipate vehicles making turns onto and from the new road. There are no new traffic signals being installed with the project.

After the roadway opens, there will still be some construction activity in the general vicinity as crews finish up punch-list items.

A concrete slab below the asphalt surface has buckled upwards, requiring temporary closure of KY 218 just east of Horse Cave. KYTC maintenance crews were on-site most of Saturday evening to bust up the concrete segment and fill it with a temporary asphalt mix in order to reopen the road for the remainder of this weekend. Long-term closure is not expected at this time and engineers will make a more thorough inspection on Monday.
