Fire causes damage to buildings on Turkey Mountain

HORSESHOE BEND -- The maintenance building and golf cart shed adjacent to the Golf Course at Turkey Mountain, sustained damage from fire on March 11. Parks and Recreation, formerly MRID, personnel were burning cardboard boxes in a 55 gallon drum when sparks ignited the surrounding area between a building and the fuel pumps, according to Fire Chief Mike Hilliker.

High winds may have contributed to spreading the fire which also scorched the Boy Scout/Youth Center and the grass surrounding the buildings.

The cart shed sustained wall and roof damage; however, many supplies contained inside the shed were salvaged. Fire fighters were able to access openings in the side of the cart shed and maintenance building to contain the fire to one section of the buildings and the roofs. The roofs of the buildings had been replaced recently following storm damage from last fall.

A previous incident occurred two months ago at the golf course when the staff was burning stumps from fallen trees and the fire burned adjacent areas to number one tee box, and toward the Pro Shop and putting green. At that time, staff was apprised to call in to City Hall when burning; however, no call was placed March 11.

The damaged properties are covered by insurance according to Bill VanderPas, City Recorder/Treasurer. Chief Hilliker placed the city under a burn ban immediately following the incident.
