Watching a sled dog do what he loves

12/27/2024

What’s planned for the new year?

So far, I’m signed up for two races. 10 dog pro Tahquamenon Country Sled Dog Race, and Beargrease 120.

I’ll also be attending the new Hiawatha Heritage race, Copperdog, and UP200 as a handler for the local collegiate mush club.

Meanwhile - just *lots* of running dogs! Not only training my own team, but student teams as well.

I’d also really love to get some more tours rolling, that’s the main reason I began working as a kennel manager. We’ve had our first couple for the winter season recently, and I forgot how much I loved doing them.

Balto will be competing with me in both races as of now, although he gets bored of training easily he’s one of the most competitive dogs I’ve seen in a race setting. Once we feel comfortable with base miles on our race dogs, Summit will try out the gangline for the first time as well šŸ›·

It’s a little earlier than I’d planned - but Summit had decided my Fort Knox of a puppy pen was no longer sufficient to contain him, and was set on being with the ā€œbig dogsā€

Summit has graduated to his own tether spot in the dog yard and is settling in nicely. He’s made friends with his neighbors - and is already almost as big as them!

ā€˜Tis the season for holiday sled dog rides! We took our top 10 out for some kids rides today, and Balto led for a bit.

Until he caught on to the fact we were just doing circles… at which point he opted out and ran in wheel instead 🤣

For dogs that can run 20-40 miles in one go, the stopping and starting can be frustrating. But it’s good practice for lining out and getting the hang of our ā€œready… alright!ā€

Hey, it’s been awhile! Notice anything different?

With the seemingly inevitable TikTok ban approaching, it’s time for me to more reliably branch out into other social media. I’m still on instagram, YouTube, and Kofi.

But… I’m also happy to announce my chosen kennel name: Riot Dogs! And so that’s what I’ll keep this page as.

Although having my own kennel is still a distant dream I’m working really hard to accomplish - I felt that since I’ve outgrown the ā€œ2ā€ in ā€œ2dogteamā€ and acquired my potential foundation stud in Alaska, I may as well embrace my own kennel identity.

One day I hope to see my Riot Dogs competing in mid distance racing all across the Great Lakes - and maybe beyond šŸ‘€

What would you pack in your canine first aid kit?

This kit started small enough to fit in a makeup bag, and has expanded over the years as I’ve gained experience.

Some things I forgot to add:
• Oral syringes
• Liniment gel
• Biozide or Vetricyn

Everything you might need to keep your canine companion safe, whether you’re on the trails or at home.Link to the products I feature in this video and more: ...

Want to help me be able to train and race this season? Small donations for gas and food are extremely appreciated.

What does running dogs entail? Well, a whole lot more than just running!

Where’s Jun?!

If you’ve been following us on our other social media, you know I have a border collie, Juniper, in addition to my sled dog Balto.

Juniper did not come to Alaska with us for a few reasons:

1. He would have to live on the remote glacier 24/7, meaning he’d be separated from me during my weekends.

2. He would have to live *outside*, on the glacier - 24/7. There is no indoor structure aside from minimal crew housing, just big enough for beds.

3. He would have to fly in cargo. Being a nervous dog already, this would not be ideal for him.

4. Non-sled dogs are not allowed, anyway.

Juniper has been staying with a trusted friend back home in Michigan, and he’s having an absolute blast playing with new dog friends and cuddling with new human friends.

Don’t get me wrong, though - I’m counting down the days until I can hold him again. Juniper is my heart dog, my first dog, and it’s so hard to be away.
