The city of Olympia, Washington, is currently moving to become the first city in the state to formally recognize and protect polyamorous families.
A proposed ordinance, initiated in January 2026, aims to add "family or relationship structure" to the city's anti-discrimination civil rights protections, specifically protecting non-monogamous, polyamorous, and other diverse, non-traditional household structures from housing and service discrimination.
If approved, Olympia would be one of the few cities in the United States to adopt such comprehensive protections for polyamorous relationships.
