So, you want to be an expert?
Tip # 1: Share your expertise GRATIS!
You can call yourself an expert until you’re blue in the face but if you don’t share that expertise what good is it? And although we’d like to think so, everyone won’t pay a premium upfront if you haven’t shown the value you hold to their business or brand.
Sharing your expertise could be as simple as speaking on a panel, posting on your social media, or as advanced as offering a free e-book or course.
Tip # 2: Establish your branding
Branding is kind of like “body language”, it’s not the only way to communicate but people believe it as much as what you say.
You’ve started sharing your expertise online (and one day in-person) and building an audience, but when they search for you online your messaging is muddled.
When people come looking for you the branding across all platforms and your website should be the same. It’s as easy as choosing 3-5 colors, a logo, and an “about” that becomes instantly associated with you.
I have a brand style guide, a branding inspo board, and use ’s Brand Kit to ensure all of my graphics I create fall within the scope of my branding. Simple!
Tip # 3: Pick a side
When I say pick a side, I mean stick to what you know. My favorite theater director in college, Mrs. White (rest her soul), used to say, “Dance with the one who brought you.” We spent months practicing for a few performances and it was a reminder to not abandon what you’ve done up until this point, it’s gotten you this far.
You have spent years, maybe even decades, cultivating the expertise you now possess, and people are looking for what you have to offer. Be consistent and concise with your messaging and don’t get distracted with things that aren’t in your wheelhouse. Only speak on things if you can do so intelligently.
