The Shortest War in History Lasted Just 38 Minutes
Imagine a war that begins and ends before you even finish watching a TV episode. That’s exactly what happened in 1896 during the famous Anglo-Zanzibar War.
The conflict started in Zanzibar when a new Sultan took power without the approval of the United Kingdom, which had strong influence over the region at the time. When the Sultan refused to step down, British authorities gave him an ultimatum: leave the palace or face military action.
When the deadline passed, British warships positioned in the harbor opened fire on the Sultan’s palace. The bombardment was overwhelming. Cannons destroyed much of the palace and quickly crippled the Sultan’s defenses.
Just 38 minutes after the first shots were fired, the Sultan’s forces surrendered. The Sultan himself fled, and the British installed a new ruler who was more cooperative with their demands.
Because the fighting lasted only 38 minutes, it remains the shortest recorded war in history.
