Houston City Council was set to vote on how to spend $314 million dollars in reimbursement money from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Disaster Recovery fund following last years derecho storm and Hurricane Beryl. That vote was delayed to make room for more discussion on how exactly the funds will be distributed. The key stumbling block is $50 million allocated to recovery for damaged homes. A City of Houston report says there’s $229 million needed in home repair across the city. Mayor John Whitmire says more than $151 million will be going to the Power Generation Resilience Program that includes ensuring backup power is available at critical locations like cooling centers and public safety sites. Also included in the funding is debris recovery and homeless services.

Southwest Airlines says they will begin assigned seating on January 27, 2026, ending their open-seating policy after decades of service. The airline says the move will give customers “greater control over their travel experience,” like choosing seats with more legroom and removing uncertainty of not knowing where they will sit.

A historic milestone has docked in Galveston. The Wharves Board of Trustees has approved an operating agreement with the Battleship Texas Foundation, paving the way for the restored 1914 warship to berth at Pier 15. This move comes as the vessel nears completion of a major restoration on Pelican Island where it’s been a striking sight for the past few years as the search for a new home have been debated and negotiated.

The Battleship Texas, a veteran of both World Wars, will become a public attraction once certain conditions are met. These include securing adequate insurance and submitting a severe weather mooring plan approved by the Port of Galveston and the U.S. Coast Guard. The agreement marks a significant step after years of negotiations, with the foundation working to secure insurance and a severe weather mooring plan, in addition to ensuring the ship’s safety and accessibility for visitors. The agreement to bring the battleship to Pier 15 also resolves concerns from nearby stakeholders, like Katie’s Seafood House, whose owner and operators previously expressed concerns about the mooring of the ship during hurricanes and the fact that the battleship would have blocked the view from the restaurant.

Overall, the development promises to boost Galveston’s tourism and honor Texas history, with the ship’s relocation expected once restoration wraps up.

Good morning, Houston! It’s going to be sunny and hot all day. We officially reached 100 degrees for the first time this year on Tuesday and could challenge that again today. The high temp is slated to be around 97 degrees. Stay hydrated and have a great Wednesday!

THE BRICE IS RIGHT: Brice Matthews hit a go-ahead, two-run homer (his third blast in two games), and made a nice play on the 4-6-3 to end the game tonight. The Astros have won three in a row. Houston goes for the sweep at 2:40pm Wednesday.

The man could run. The man could bulldoze other men on the football field. The man can also BBQ. Earl Campbell will always be a Houston legend, no matter if they wear Columbia Blue in Tennessee.
