Who they say they are.
Overview

New Day Pacifica is a group of Pacifica listeners and staff who want to save Pacifica and keep it from crashing out of existence in the next year. We include current and former Board members, staff and lots of long-term listeners concerned about the existential crisis at Pacifica.

Who they are.
Manipulators whose mission is to make the Pacifica Foundation a place of elitist thinking, using their power to dismantle the mission of Pacifica (a place of diversity, seeking to understand and forge relationships with others, educating each other on ways to address conflict and working together, with the purpose of peace, justice, and healing through the airwaves). They helped to continue some of it financial instability because they have used practices of unfairness across the whole network. They have used their power to distract and pitch people against one another and they have worked to destroy the very heart of Pacifica.

Pacifica Foundation should be an inclusive, diverse, and anti-racist structure for the future of progressive radio. Already, they have at KPFT, found ways to unfairly stop the election of others who could provide fairness by those that represent the communities in their cities and beyond.

Dear KPFT Friend,

Our station can help transform us individually and stimulate the creation of more justice, locally and around our planet. But we cannot preach one thing, live another, and expect to remain in balance.

The operation of the oversight Local Station Board (LSB) is disorienting:
-- The Interim General Manager is occupying two different seats. He is clinging to an elected, voting staff seat while in another seat on the same board as the appointed manager.
-- The board chair regularly confuses facilitation with domination.

Things there are not right.

I urge three curative actions:

1. Your attendance and input at the monthly board meeting matters. Sunlight disinfects. It's the second Wednesdays at 7pm CT. Meeting calendar at kpftx.org

In Place of the CHAT
EQUITY is the plus sign between Diversity and Inclusion
Diversity and inclusion are lacking elements of the American landscape and also Pacifica Radio. It doesn't mean that there are no BIPOC (which is not a category as far as I'm concerned), but when you have to name or count the people of color to sustain your notion of fairness, this is where we fail. Without equity in the governance (which you put on a hiatus) and democracy (which is not who has the majority) diversity and inclusion are not signs of fairness, justice, integrity or ethics.

Even the court systems are not safe for fairness as we count getting the majority as wielding power of democracy. It is not. And not being able to see it, ranks right up there with justice is blind. I know some of you won't read this and none of you really want the conversation to begin with, but here's the challenge. Equity is part of and the heart of Diversity and Inclusion. It is a culture we cultivate and some of you are so hell-bent on being in charge and having your way that the culture is one that evokes toxicity and pain.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion work to transform a corporate culture of choosing leaders rather than cultivating leadership. If we want to evolve, we need to do so now because none of us are getting any younger and its time some of us get out of the business of supremacy and get to the heart of multicultural love and care. I dare you.

Dysfunctional Boards
Dysfunctional Boards are EVERYONE'S PROBLEMS. CRITICAL HIGHLIGHTS are definitely a problem at KPFT. The Big Letters are critical places. New Day has no business in KPFT's business.

CRITICAL: Personal Agendas. When Board members, quite often the President, push their own agendas and personal preferences over what serves the greater good of the club and benefits the members.

Micromanaging. The role of the Board is to focus on high-level issues such as vision, strategy, capital improvements, financial health, key policies, etc. Boards that major in minor things and don’t let the club’s management do their job are not Boards. They are managers too. That’s a real problem.

CRITICAL: Poor Participation. Board members who miss meetings, arrive late or fail to prepare for meetings render a Board ineffective. They have to be fully engaged.

BIG CRITICAL: Secret Meetings. This is a sure sign of trouble. When certain Board members are left out of the decision-making process, disorder and distrust can quickly set in.

Lack of Secrets. When Board members can’t keep certain information confidential, problems follow. There are certain things that must be for the Boards’ eyes only.

Poorly Run Meetings. A board meeting should operate from an agenda, have a set time limit, and be run in an orderly fashion. If this does not happen, the meetings become ineffective.

BIG CRITICAL: Domineering Personalities. Board members who monopolize meetings, are condescending to their peers, or fail to listen to other’s opinions should not be on a Board of Directors.

BIG CRITICAL: Lack of Respect and Trust. Board members must respect and trust one another or it becomes a challenge to maintain a highly functional Board – and one that is also respected and trusted by the club’s members.

SORELY LACKING/CRITICAL: Lack of Communication. If the Board is not transparent and constantly communicating to the members and club associates, then distrust and suspicion develop. Sunlight is the best disinfectant.

A dysfunctional Board creates problems across the board. Is this any way to run a club?

The Chat at KPFT Meetings was removed so that people could not voice their concerns. They also put "governance" on hiatus because they didn't have the numbers to get things through. Censorship is rampant, so I'm taking what I write the board to the streets. Message us with comments. We don't censor. Look for a survey to address the notion that KPFT needs ALL NEW BOARD MEMBERS who believe in its mission and want progressive radio in these times of strife. ~ PK McCary, CAB Chair

What Causes People to Be Racist?

“In some ways, it’s super simple. People learn to be whatever their society and culture teaches them. We often assume that it takes parents actively teaching their kids, for them to be racist. The truth is that unless parents actively teach kids not to be racists, they will be,” said Jennifer Richeson, a Yale University social psychologist. “This is not the product of some deep-seated, evil heart that is cultivated. It comes from the environment, the air all around us.”

The culture at KPFT is racist. And has been for a while. The discriminatory practices have affected people of color (3 interim managers and 1 general manager). Efficacy is missing. Hope you look at the 10 issues that start to fix that and hope for more than patronizing a few of us.
