Last post was a few months ago when we announced the death of legendary bebop musician and educator Barry Harris. Since then we've been working on a website, developing projects like the Harder Bop Band, and developing the infrastructure that avoids the traditional music industrial complex. Kinky Soul Productions is also pleased to announce that Kinky Soul Poem is definitely back in production.

This is Brother Said. Last week was a time of mourning for the great Doctor Barry Harris, the man who inspired the foundational musical principles that guide Kinky Soul Productions. Now I understand what thesavior meant when he said: “The first shall be last, and the last shall be first”. He also told his disciples that if you want to be great then serve others. In the pantheon of jazz greats, Barry Harris is the least of them to most jazz fans. But what makes Barry greater than even Bird and Dizzy and Monk and Bud and Cannonball - is Barry served the black music community all his life. He codified and categorized bebop theory and passed his knowledge on to anyone regardless of who they were as long as they were willing to learn. His European students sat his feet like he was a prophet. And he barely made a penny for all his efforts. He tirelessly served the jazz community and almost single handedly saved jazz and by extension saved African - American music tradition. Not only was he tireless, he courageously denounced the Modalism and Avaunt Garde movements that swallowed up Miles Davis and Coltrane et al - and he didn’t care who didn’t like it! My kind of guy. Barry will g down in the history of music as one of the greatest music teachers of all time. May he Rest In Peace until That Day.

This is Kinky Soul Productions and we do this: we produce music rooted in the blues and jazz tradition of the African-American legacy - a legacy mostly abandoned. So to symbolize our embrace of our roots and our hopes for it’s continued growth - we picked a human mascot. It’s my beautiful granddaughter with that huge Afro. And the Afro is real, haha.
