We’ve lost the Queen of Hearts mansion in Iowa 💔
The Queen of Hearts mansion had cultural and architectural significance. That kind of legacy carries monetary value, too. Losing it feels like losing a piece of history.
Sorry for the ramble—I’m just really sad for this incredibly special old home.

The James J. Hill House in Saint Paul, Minnesota, United States, was built by railroad magnate James J. Hill. The house, completed in 1891, is near the eastern end of Summit Avenue near the Cathedral of Saint Paul. The house, for its time, was very large and was the “showcase of St. Paul” until James J. Hill’s death in 1916. It is listed as a U.S. National Historic Landmark, operated by the Minnesota Historical Society. It is also a contributing property to the Historic Hill District
The home has 36,000 square feet (3,300 m2) of living area and 44,552 square feet (4,139.0 m2) of total space.
Hill bought three lots on Summit Avenue in 1882, during an era when wealthy citizens were scrambling to build fashionable homes in the neighborhood. The street offered a commanding view of downtown St. Paul and the Mississippi River area, making it a highly desirable location. The family previously lived in the Lowertown area in St. Paul, near Ninth and Canada streets. As new warehouses and railroad tracks crowded the Lowertown residential area, and as Hill’s collection of paintings and sculpture overflowed the house, the Hill family thought it was desirable to move. Hill also realized that recent improvements in home technology, such as electric lighting, plumbing, ventilation, and fireproofing, could be incorporated into a new home. Moreover, since Hill was becoming a socially prominent person in the community, a new home would stand as a tribute to his status as the “Empire Builder”.

The Harry Packer Mansion: the building that inspired Magic Kingdom's Haunted Mansion

New ownership: After changing hands several times over the years, the mansion was sold to new owners in 2021 who are dedicated to preserving its history.

Location: Overlooking downtown Jim Thorpe, the mansion is within walking distance of local shops and restaurants.

The Abandoned Mansion of Forgotten Splendor: A Lost Gem of American Aristocracy.

Hidden in the quiet outskirts of an old American town stands a red-brick Victorian mansion, its twin turrets and ornate gables reaching toward the sky like a fading memory of greatness. Built in the late 1800s by industrialist Charles Wentworth, the home was once the crown jewel of the region—a showcase of wealth, artistry, and ambition.

Inside, sweeping staircases curve like ribbons, hand-carved wood panels adorn the walls, and grand ballrooms still whisper of evenings filled with music, silk gowns, and crystal chandeliers. Every room carries the scars of time—peeling paint, cracked plaster, and weathered floors—yet even in decay, the craftsmanship speaks of a bygone era when no detail was spared.

The Wentworth family, however, was not immune to the tides of fortune. After the stock market crash of 1929, their empire collapsed. Unable to maintain the massive estate, they abandoned it in haste, leaving behind empty rooms that once echoed with laughter. For decades, the mansion stood as a silent witness to history, too costly to restore yet too grand to destroy.

Today, urban explorers, photographers, and historians marvel at its haunting beauty. To walk through its halls is to step into a time capsule—an abandoned masterpiece where both opulence and sorrow linger in the air.
