As a kid, I remember being forced to learn the pledge of allegiance, and recited every morning in school just to find out that the country I was pledging allegiance to wanted nothing to do with me because of the color of my skin.

I also remember as a kid having a daily planner/agenda that was given to us by the school. And then the back of the agenda on the very last page, the same page with all the maps and conversions, was the national anthem. I remember having to memorize the national anthem, and having to sing it as part of school exercises. Just to realize that the national anthem like the country I was pledging allegiance to one and nothing to do with me because of the color of my skin.

I still went on to join the Armed Forces.
Maybe the indoctrination worked?
