July 11 was a day that Ruth Steinfeld had waited for. In 2022, the Holocaust survivor was chosen to sit for world-renowned artist David Kassan. Now, at 91, she was about to see for the first time, her life-size portrait unveiled at HOLOCAUST MUSEUM HOUSTON.

Her portrait is one of many survivors brought to life by Kassan that is now showing at HMH. The grand-opening reception for “Facing Survival | David Jon Kassan” will be held Aug. 1. Read the JHV's full story:

In a defiant speech to the U.S. Congress, Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to continue fighting in Gaza until Israel achieves “total victory” over Hamas and, in the face of virulent opposition at home and abroad, argued that the war was a shared fight for democracy.

“We’re not only protecting ourselves, we’re protecting you,” Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, said in the speech Wednesday afternoon to a chamber that applauded him dozens of times. “Our enemies are your enemies. Our fight is your fight. And our victory will be your victory.”

Jewish and Israeli leaders and lawmakers condemned what officials are investigating as an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is set on July 24 to address Congress about Israel’s war with Hamas, also weighed in on X. “Sara and I were shocked by the apparent attack on President Trump,” Netanyahu said on X. “We pray for his safety and speedy recovery.”

The men were some of the 50,000 people who this week visited the gravesite of Chabad-Lubavitch Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, known as the Rebbe, to mark the Jewish anniversary of his death.

There was no major damage reported to any synagogues in Houston, but Congregation K’Nesseth Israel in Baytown sustained major damage to the facade of its 94-year-old building.
