For 13 years, Congregation Shma Koleinu’s “Journey: The Jewish Discovery Project” has quietly challenged one of the most long-standing assumptions in synagogue life: that Sunday morning religious school has to look the way it always has.

It doesn’t.

Since its launch in January 2014, Journey has offered Houston-area families a different model of supplementary Jewish education – one built around relationships, creativity, experiential learning and the conviction that Jewish identity is best cultivated when children discover that Judaism belongs to them.

Holocaust survivor Michael Spiegel has passed away at the age of 89 in Tomball, Texas.

Spiegel was born April 30, 1937, in Paris and was smuggled out of Vichy France at age 3 in the trunk of a car. He never saw his mother again.

Eighteen years ago, Basya Schechter got the idea to set the text of “Shir HaShirim” (“Song of Songs”) to music. Schechter, creative leader of the world music band Pharaoh’s Daughter, had completed an album, “Haran,” that fused Sephardic music with Middle Eastern folk traditions.

This summer, 18 years after the initial inspiration, the Pharaoh’s Daughter album “Songs of Desire” was released on the Tzadik label. The recording features 12 songs sung by Schechter in English, Hebrew, Arabic, Spanish and Yiddish – set to swirling soaring Middle Eastern melodies and instrumentation.
