Congregation Or Ami Rabbi Gideon Estes (MERCAZ USA slate) and Elisheva Medetsky (Eretz HaKodesh slate) have been elected as the Houston-based delegates to the 2025 World Zionist Congress (WZC).

“I am very excited that Mercaz did as well as it did throughout the world. I am honored to serve as an alternate delegate,” Rabbi Estes told the JHV. “I think it is very important that voices of non-Orthodox Judaism are heard and represented. I look forward to being a part of this historic gathering.”

Close to 150 members of Congregation Brith Shalom gathered at Brays Bayou to take part in the ritual of Tashlich.

Rabbi Ranon Teller led a short service, with songs, guitar and a shofar blowing before everyone took pieces of bread and “cast their sins” into the bayou.

Sheila Johnstone is a molecular biologist who also happens to be a dancer, duo concert pianist, the co-author of two cookbooks and a former New York Fashion Exchange clothing designer.

What Johnstone is most proud of, however, is her volunteer work teaching others sign language. And the Jewish senior has made it her passion since moving to Houston more than three decades ago.
