LAKOTA SIOUX CAMP of 3,000 people, Jan. 1891. Perhaps the finest photo of any Native encampment. Days after the Wounded Knee Massacre of Dec. 29, 1890, John Grabill photographed the largest American Indian camp not on a reservation. The camp was at White Clay Creek in South Dakota, not far from the much smaller camp at Wounded Knee. (Sitting Bullโ€™s camp along the Little Big Horn River in Montana was perhaps two to three times this size when Col. George Custer decided to attack in 1876.)

Gen. Nelson A. Miles and 3,500 troops surrounded the camp in the photo to force a peace agreement. Gen. Miles had not been at the Massacre. However the Tragedy started, Miles criticized commanding officers since โ€œnot only the warriors, but the sick Chief Spotted Elk and a large number of women and children who tried to escapeโ€ฆwere hunted down and killed."

INSIDE A LARGE TIPI, 1902-11. With a smile rarely seen in early photos, the woman had some resemblance to Crow medicine woman Pretty Shield, but was perhaps too young to be her. The man had a pompadour comb-back, common among the Crow in earlier years. Each held a pipe. Photographer Richard Throssel lived on the Crow Reservation in Eastern Montana.

I love the grins, the relaxed camaraderie. There was blur from motion, but Richard Throssel fired the shutter at the perfect instant. His bulky camera was respectfully low. As with Miles City lensman L.A. Huffman before him, many of Throsselโ€™s best captures were made by NOT telling people to sit still and face the camera. I used Photoshop to enhance clarity. MAIN STREET, 1882. My favorite signs, Ringer & Johnson Livery and J.F. Murphy Blacksmithing, were in view. Miles City (Montana) photographer L.A. Huffman preserved the scene looking west on the south side of Main. Also in view were the Chop House & Bakery, Metro Hotel (look high for lettering), and S.H. Canโ€™s Chinese Laundry. Further away, a small sign advertised Oysters. Although blurred from motion, you can see that the boy at the right was riding a large tricycle. If using a PC, please click photo to better see detail.

When the Northern Pacific Railroad arrived in 1881, the area became a key shipping point to eastern markets for Texas cattle that had been driven north to feed on the unfenced ranges of Eastern Montana. Text and digital restoration of photo by Gary Coffrin.

Q: Did they really BOMB Miles City during WW II?

A: Yes, and itโ€™s an amazing tale. Miles City (Montana) was the site of the ONLY domestic bombing mission ordered by the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. On March 21, 1944, a huge Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress flew from Rapid City (South Dakota) to break an ice jam on the Yellowstone River. Approximately 500 people had been displaced by flooding, and boats had been used to rescue some marooned families. The road north toward Jordan could not be reached, and water levels were rising. Leighton Keye, Miles City Mayor and owner of the Olive Hotel, had convinced Governor Sam Ford to call the Army for help.

The day before the B-17 dropped bombs, local pilots Leighton โ€œBrudโ€ Foster (Foster Drugs), Fred Cook (Cook Signs), and Ted Filbrandt (one account listed Maurice Smith of Smithโ€™s Bootery instead) had flown their small Piper Cubs to drop 12 homemade bombs made from 1,500 pounds of dynamite. Their homemade bombs exploded on the surface of the ice and had little effect.

On its first run, the B-17 Flying Fortress dropped one 250-pound bomb just downstream from the 7th Street Bridge that crossed the Yellowstone River. The next two runs dropped six bombs each, bringing the total to 13 bombs, 3,250 pounds of explosives.

The bombs were configured with a 10-second delay to explode underwater. The hundreds of spectators heard loud whooshes rather than bangs. There were, however, impressive tornado-like spirals of mud, water, and ice that peaked at about 150 feet high! The bombing mission succeeded, and water levels fell about 10 feet during the next 24 hours. The event was broadcast live from atop Garfield School by Ian Elliot on radio station KRJF, 1340 AM. Listeners some miles away heard the whooshes on the radio first, followed by the airborne soundwaves.

The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress had a wingspan of 104 feet. The plane had a crew of 10 that day, including the bombardier. Top speed for a B-17 was about 300 mph. One Miles City resident, reportedly aerial sprayer Lyman Choate, helped direct the pilot.

I am from the Wild West town of Miles City. I love the images that illustrate our heritage. This photo was not the particular plane that bombed Miles City, but it is among the few surviving color photos of a B-17 bomber during WW II. Text and digital restoration of photo by Gary Coffrin.
