Robert De Niro was born on August 17, 1943, in New York City, into an artistic family. He began his career in the 1960s and rose to prominence with roles in Bang the Drum Slowly (1973), Mean Streets (1973), and especially The Godfather Part II (1974), which earned him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He continued to impress with Taxi Driver (1976), Raging Bull (1980 – Best Actor Oscar), Goodfellas, Casino, Heat, The Irishman (2019), and Killers of the Flower Moon (2023). Beyond acting, he co-founded the Tribeca Film Festival, the global Nobu restaurant chain, and is a vocal advocate for social justice, arts education, and climate action. With over 60 years of dedication, De Niro stands as a living icon of cinematic excellence and civic responsibility.

IT’S A MIRACLE that L.A. Huffman’s exposure from about 1901 succeeded. Huffman had been capturing action shots for some years that should have been difficult or impossible with slow cameras and glass-plate negatives of the era. You can see the cattle with horns at the left rushing toward Huffman; the dust to the rear of the roped calf; the taut rope; the galloping rider at the rear. The rare action shot, with so much going on, was not included in any of the five books on Huffman.

L.A. Huffman’s bulky camera used glass-plate negatives. He started photographing Montana during 1879. No other photographer during Huffman’s era captured working life on the open range like he did. WILD HORSE RACE, circa 1917, at the Miles City (Montana) Round-up. The dust (!) and the unpredictability of trying to catch, saddle, and then ride a wild horse across the finish line were perfectly captured in this early postcard.

The Miles City Round-up was a large, three-day rodeo and patriotic celebration produced on the July 4th weekend. The first MC Round-up photo had been held in 1913. The rodeo had no connection to the Miles City Bucking Horse Sale, and both were held during the early 1950s.

Ralph R. Doubleday, the dean of American rodeo photographers, and Miles City druggist and photographer George Foster were business partners from 1917-1918 ... which explained the "D-F Photo Co." name on the image. Text and digital restoration of postcard photo by Gary Coffrin.

Mama said, "THERE’LL BE DAYS LIKE THIS." At the end of July 1915, Walter Dean Jr. photographed flood damage at Forsyth, Montana. In earlier decades the “June Rise” had made steamboat travel possible on the Yellowstone River.

The derailment was along the Milwaukee Road tracks after flooding destroyed 600 feet of track. Smoke appeared to be raising, presumably from derailed cars that were burning behind the locomotive. The Montana Historical Society identified the barefoot lad as Walter Dean III. Forsyth is 45 miles west of Miles City in eastern Montana. Forsyth’s many historic buildings, particularly the courthouse, make a visit worthwhile. Text and digital restoration of photo by Gary Coffrin. Q: What did Cahn’s store and photographer L.A. Huffman have to do with shoes made from human skin?

A: L.A. Huffman’s photo will introduce the bizarre tale of shoes made from human skin. Morris Cahn, dressed in silk hat and coattails, had arrived at Miles City (MT) by steamboat in 1877 to buy buffalo hides and sell whiskey, groceries, and clothes.

In 1879, Morris Cahn left Miles City with money to buy goods in Bismarck (ND), traveling with the Fort Keogh paymaster’s expedition of 17 soldiers. Big Nose George Parrot and three toughs held up the expedition, robbing Cahn of about $3,600. The location, two miles west of Terry (MT), was thereafter named Conn's (a misspelling of Cahn’s name) Coulee.

In 1880, Big Nose George was drinking in Miles City. Sheriff Tom Irving and L.A. Huffman were chatting when Big Nose George was spotted. Irving concocted a clever charade that allowed his deputy Lem Wilson to get the drop on the outlaw.

Parrot was returned to Rawlins (WY) on murder charges, where he was hanged by vigilantes. Rawlins physician John Osborne had a death mask made of Big Nose George’s face. Moreover, Osborne had shoes made from Parrott’s skin. Osborne was later elected Wyoming governor, and wore the shoes made from human skin to his own inauguration.

Later Osborne was a director at the Rawlins National Bank, where he displayed the death mask and the famous shoes in the bank lobby. The photo in the first comment shows both. Commentary and digital restoration of photo by Gary Coffrin.
