All lives matter. But the system does not reflect that statement. All lives matter. But some people are treated differently in this country. All lives matter. But the social and economic disparity between races shows us that some lives don’t matter. All lives matter. But to some people your feelings and experiences don’t matter. All lives matter. But to some your grievances are not real and don’t matter. All lives matter. But you need to be quiet and stop saying Black Lives Matter. When I hear or read the statement “All Lives Matter,” it is a way to pivot and turn away from the real issues and racism that are so ingrained in this country. Some people don’t want to see the real problems plaguing our country and examine their own hearts. It’s easier to just say, “All Lives Matter” and let the conversation stop there. Black Lives Matter. When you read that statement and consider the history of slavery, Jim Crow, segregation, civil rights, and modern day discrimination, you can see how this statement is valid and relevant. If you read it at its superficial level and completely ignore the history attached to that statement, then you are blind to what is going on in your community, city, and country. The original sin of this country has made a full circle and we need to acknowledge it and start making real changes. When we as a nation finally recognize, address, and resolve these issues we can move forward as a unified country. BLACK LIVES MATTER.
