A TRIP TO THE STORE meant something different, circa 1884-1890. The large sign at the right advertised saddles from Moran Brothers, an early saddlery in Miles City, Montana. The wood crate near the door was painted โ€œFallon, Mont.,โ€ indicating a town 50 miles east of Miles City. The Bandwagon X Store boasted of selling clothing, groceries, boots, hats, shirts, underwear, to***co, ammunition. A small sign at the far right listed melons and fruit.

The view was a cropped portion of a print that had suffered deterioration. I restored it to the extent possible for Miles Cityโ€™s Range Riders Museum. Robert C. Morrison was the likely photographer. The underfunded Montana Historical Society has 3,600 Morrison negatives (the best source for image clarity), but has yet to scan and post any Morrison photos. I hope progress can be made before another generation dies without seeing our visual history. Commentary and Photoshop restoration of image by Gary Coffrin.

Happy 78th birthday to James Woods, born April 18, 1947!

Woodsโ€™ career gained major traction in the 1980s, a decade that showcased his intensity and rangeโ€”qualities that would define his work going forward. After rising to prominence in The Onion Field (1979), he quickly became known for complex, fast-talking characters who often walked the line between charm and volatility.
โค๏ธGet yours tee ๐Ÿ‘‰ https://actorteesprint.com/owner
In 1983, Woods starred in David Cronenbergโ€™s Videodrome, a sci-fi psychological thriller that earned cult status and demonstrated Woodsโ€™ ability to ground surreal material with unnerving realism. A year later, he played Max Bercovicz in Sergio Leoneโ€™s Once Upon a Time in America, opposite Robert De Niroโ€”a performance he considers one of his personal favorites. That same year, he starred in Against All Odds, continuing a run of varied, high-profile roles.

He earned his first Oscar nomination for his portrayal of journalist Richard Boyle in Oliver Stoneโ€™s Salvador (1986), and just a year later, won his first Primetime Emmy for the TV film Promise. He added a second Emmy for My Name Is Bill W. (1989), solidifying his reputation as a force in both film and television.

By the end of the โ€˜80s, Woods had carved out a unique place in Hollywoodโ€”respected for his intensity, intelligence, and willingness to take risks with difficult characters. These qualities led to acclaimed roles in the '90s and beyond, from Casino and Nixon to Ghosts of Mississippi (earning him a second Oscar nomination) and Contact. His work as the voice of Hades in Disneyโ€™s Hercules (1997) introduced him to a new generation, and he continued working across genres, including in the legal drama Shark and the animated series Justice League Action.

Woods has maintained a presence in film, TV, and voice work across decades, with a career shaped in no small part by the risks and recognition he earned in the 1980s.

CHARLES BELDEN gained fame for his photographs of Wyomingโ€™s massive Pitchfork Ranch from 1921 to 1940. Beldenโ€™s grandfather was the first mayor of my current hometown, San Jose, California.

Usually I post my restorations of earlier images by photographers from Eastern Montana. L.A. Huffman, S.J. Morrow, Christian Barthelmess, Richard Throssel, and Evelyn Cameron, all from earlier times, have been the subjects of superb books.

Charles Belden is a favorite of mine, in part because he still used glass-plate negatives in years when glass had been supplanted by flexible film. Text and Photoshop restoration of image by Gary Coffrin. If at a PC, click photo to enlarge/clarify.

BREAKTIME at the Crown W Ranch, 1906. The whimsical group portrait was shot by English immigrant Evelyn Cameron. The "Bystander" was a weekly English tabloid. The Crown W was near Knowlton, east of Miles City, Montana.

PC users can click image to enlarge/clarify. Two gents were wearing laced footwear. The third gent from the left was Col. J.H. Price, an English expat who was being visited by the Camerons. Price reportedly had been a college professor and raised fine polo ponies. The tall gent with the peaked hat was Jack Lattoon. Text and digital restoration of photo by Gary Coffrin.

THE HONYOCKER, 1902, by L.A. Huffman. Honyocker, of German derivation, was the cattlemenโ€™s derogatory term for a homesteader who fenced the land and turned the grass โ€œwrong side up.โ€ Not a tree could be seen. Wind was blowing the horsesโ€™ tails. Unusual for the era, but typical for the Miles City lensman, this was an action shot: No stopping, no facing the camera. The dog was nearer the camera, in front of the dust.

L.A. Huffman photographed George Wilsey and his four-horse team near Wing, ND. The photo was likely from Huffmanโ€™s 1902 travels with historian O.D. Wheeler, who retraced the Lewis and Clark Trail and published a pictorial history showing the changes over 100 years.

I consider this the perfect framing of the working man at his solitary task. Commentary and digital, small-file restoration of photo by Gary Coffrin. As always, I hope PC users will click image to enlarge/clarify.

- Additional Information -
Itโ€™s important to note that the Northern Plains tribes had no concept of individual ownership of land. Conflicts among tribes occurred over territorial control, but privatization of land ownership was a foreign concept.

The full(!) title of Wheeler's two-volume history was: "The Trail of Lewis and Clark, 1804-1904: A Story of the Great Exploration Across the Continent in 1804-6; With a Description of the Old Trail, Based Upon Actual Travel Over It, and of the Changes Found a Century Later."
