CROW NATIVE TROOP, Fort Custer, 1892. Lt. Samuel Churchill Robertson and his 1st Cavalry Crow Troop, which existed from 1890 to 1895, had been ignored until Richard Uptonโ€™s 1983 compilation โ€œThe Indian As a Soldier at Fort Custer, Montana.โ€ Fort Custer (Hardin) and Fort Keogh (Miles City) were built in response to Custerโ€™s 1876 defeat.

The Crow Troop was executing a sabre drill. Col. A.K. Arnold was reportedly at the center left. Segregated companies of Buffalo Soldiers, Black troops, were also at Fort Custer, likewise under the command of White officers. The last major battles on the Northern Plain had occurred in 1877. Neither Crow Troops nor Buffalo Soldier saw combat.
