We’ve had several friends and followers reach out to make sure we’re okay, thank you for thinking of us. We are safe here in Southcentral Alaska, about 500 miles away from the devastation along Alaska’s West Coast.
The region was hit by the remnants of a typhoon, from Kwigillingok to Kotzebue, that arrived at the same time as an extreme king tide, compounding the damage with record floods with winter literally knocking on their doors. Entire villages have been flooded, homes swept away, and hundreds of residents are being evacuated. Villagers are being relocated with just the clothes on their backs and some as far as Anchorage... hundreds of miles away. The fate of many coastal communities is still unknown at this time.
It truly is a national disaster — one that’s received far too little attention.
If you’d like to assist with relief and recovery efforts, donations can be made through Alaska Community Foundation. Every bit helps those displaced rebuild their lives.
Alaska State Troopers said Tuesday that they have suspended the active search for two men missing from Kwigillingok, one of the hardest-hit communities. The men are related to the storm’s lone confirmed fatality, a woman found Monday.
