Cheyenne Dog SoldiersOf all the typical Plains tribes, the Cheyenne were most distinguished for warlike qualities. Few in number, they overcame or held in check most of the peoples who opposed them, and when the westward movement of European civilization began, they made more trouble than all the rest combined. In short, they were preeminently warriors among peoples whose trade was war.
As in other Plains tribes, the warriors of the Cheyenne were organized into societies or orders. These societies were fraternal, military, and semi-religious organizations with special privileges, duties, and dress, usually tracing their origin to some mythical culture hero or medicine man. Each society had its own songs and secret ritual and exacted certain observances and standards of its members.
Of these organizations, none played such a part in the history of the Plains as the โ€œDog Soldiersโ€ of the Cheyenne.

EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY, 1905. This attention-grabbing Richard Throssel portrait of an older Crow man in full ceremonial finery was shot outdoors in front of a tepee. Throssel lived on the Crow Indian Reservation in southeastern Montana from 1902-11, but also photographed many Northern Cheyenne. Throssel later operated a studio in Billings, Montana.

Although the posted image is small (960 pixels wide), the original negative was 8x10 inches (20x25 cm), 62 times larger than 35 mm film. Viewing a scan of the negative would allow you to count and see the shape of each individual bead or quill on the leather garment. Most of Throsselโ€™s negatives are at the University of Wyoming. Commentary and digital restoration of photo by Gary Coffrin.

BULLTRAINS, circa 1883-87. Bulltrains, the eraโ€™s term although wagons were typically pulled by castrated males (steers), delivered supplies to the mining town of Maiden, Montana. Bulltrains might cover 8-12 miles per day. Usage had been more common pre-1880, before railroads approached Montana.

The Central Montana town of Maiden sprouted up in 1881 after the discovery of gold. By 1888, Maiden had more than 1000 residents. Few were left after 1906. Photographer William Culver established his Maiden studio in 1883. In 1887, Culver relocated to Lewistown, 10 miles southwest. Text and digital sharpening of photo by Gary Coffrin.

Urban Surprises. While walking one block from our house, Deb spotted a rough-legged hawk. The species is one of only three in North America that have feathers on their legs. The hawk had been finishing his dinner of squirrel, ripping and swallowing the skin and fur of the tail.
While hiking the next day, a tarantula greeted us on a local trail. It congenially allowed me to take a closeup with my phone. Deb told me she had never seen a tarantula here. This prompted me to confess that in 2006 we had one about 4 times that size in our house. I was startled(!) to see the enormous creature crawling on our kitchen floor. I grabbed a broom, swept it out the back door โ€ฆ and had never told Deb until this week. I had brought back boxes of Dadโ€™s stuff from Arizona, and the tarantula likely was my traveling companion.
